TDA4VM: CAN Controller TX RX Without Transceiver IC Is Connected with other MCU

Hi TI Support Team

Do you know if we can use TDA4 CAN TX direct connect to MCU CAN RX; TDA4 CAN RX direct connect to MCU CAN TX without CAN PHY (Transceiver IC).

I dont know if it have any risk from CAN protocol ? Because from CAN protocol the TX transmitting each bit into the bus and the RX pin need to check the data from CAN PHY(Transceiver IC) loop back.

If we dont have CAN PHY is it still working?

Hi Yutia,

Do you want to operate in internal loopback mode? Internal loopback mode doesn't require a transceiver as the data doesn't even come out of the SoC.

If that is what you want we have examples in the SDK showcasing internal loopback mode.

For any other mode Tx or Rx, the data would be needed to go out on the CAN bus and hence would need the transceiver. As per definition - "The role of the transceiver is simply to drive and detect data to and from the bus. Hi Karan

The use case: I want to use CAN physical layers connection with TDA4 and MCU in same board without CAN transceiver to exchage data.

Do you have any idea from SW side to change anything else?

Hi Yutia,

The MCU you want to communicate to is within the TDA4. The CAN controller in the TDA4 are as below mentioned:

2 in MCU domain, 14 in MAIN domain - all these 2+14 comprise of the 16 CANs there in TDA4. And none of the CAN controllers withing the TDA4 are connected.

Probably I'm not understanding your question completely, but from what I understand this use-case can is not possible.
