i2c 3.3V pull-up instead of 1.8V

Hi - 

 

I am designing with a touchscreen that interfaces with i2c and requires 3.3V levels.  I notice that the 3530 user manual (figure 18-2) shows level conversion for 3.3V, but this is while 1.8V devices are also connected to the bus.  User manual / datasheet doesn't seem to give absolute maximums for applied voltage to GPIO or i2c pins.

 

Does anyone have experience pulling the i2c SDA/SCL directly to 3.3V connected to the 35xx without level translation?  Are we asking for trouble by doing this?  

 

I appreciate any advice.
