TDA2HV: Working temperature

Part Number: TDA2HV
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRA726

Hello!

I would like to ask about working temperature of TDA2HV processor. In our application now work only A15 core and temperature increase without heatsink about 100 C. Is it normal for this processors? Other cores don't work. When on processor fan blows on processor the temperature increase to 60 C.

  • George,

If no heatsink is used it's reasonable for the processor to heat up as you've observed.  We typically recommend that you run a thermal simulation of your full system to ensure that any heatsink/chassis is able to remove the heat from the system for your use case.

  • We have EVM J6ECO with DRA726 that similar with TDA2HV. The processor DRA726 work in the same mode that our TDA2HV  (one core A15 work) and don't heat to 100 C without heatsink. So I doubt in normal work TDA2HV.

  • George,

The DRA726 and TDA2HV are different SoCs. Not only that, even for the same SoC there is device to device variability.  It is not appropriate to draw conclusions from two single units.

The bottom line is that some form of heat sink is usually required for TDA2HV designs.  Normally this is implemented with the lid of a chassis touching the top of the SoC with thermal paste, to act as a heat sink.
