66AK2E05: PCIe PHY / PLL not coming up

Part Number: 66AK2E05

We are testing a custom 66AK2E05 board and we have 2x miniPCIe slots included for standard miniPCIe modules. We have used the K2E-EVM kernel & dts as a starting point and enabled PCIE 0 & PCIE Phy 0 in the dts. However, it seems that none of the PCIe PHYs are properly enabled and the PLLs are not locked. We are using ProcSDK 6.03 at the moment and we have also tested with 6.01 with the same results.

I have seen other related threads, in one of them the issue was mixing an older U-boot versions from MCSDK with ProcSDK kernel. We are using ProcSDK U-boot and kernel based on the K2E-EVM with minor changes to run on our board. The only differences that may be related to PCIe are the SoC clock (we use the 1400MHz version), the absence of an onboard PCIe slave (SATA controller on EVM) and enabling both PCIe controllers in dts.

The relevant part of the .dts is:

&pcie0_phy {
	status = "okay";
};

&pcie0 {
	ti,syscon-pcie-id = <&pcie_devid>;
	ti,syscon-pcie-mode = <&pcie_mode>;
	status = "okay";
};

&pcie1_phy {
	status = "okay";
};

&pcie1 {
	status = "okay";
};

I had to add the two extra lines in pcie0 because I was getting a "failed to initialize host" error in dmesg and pcie0 was not shown in lspci. I noticed they were present in pcie1 dts configuration but not in pcie0 so I tried adding them and it worked. Let me know if there is something else I need to do with these.

It seems that our problem is that the PLL is not locked and in dmesg we get:

[    2.422991] keystone-pcie 21800000.pcie: Phy link never came up
[    3.428077] keystone-pcie 21020000.pcie: Phy link never came up

The relevant PCIe Serdes registers are:

Reg 0x02321FE0 and 0x02327FE0 = 1
Reg 0x02321FE4 and 0x02327FE4 = 1
Reg 0x02321FF4 and 0x02327FF4 = 0

This is the same regardless of whether we have a miniPCIe module (COTS, verified on a PC host) plugged in or not.

We are stumbling on this issue, it is one of the last parts of the board / SoC to be verified and we would like support from TI. Does it seems like there is a problem with the SoC / Linux / dts configuration or the PCIe link with the slave card?

Any help appreciated.

Related E2E threads (I could not create a related question):

  • Hi, Giannis,

    Is the pcie serdes loaded? you should at least have pcie1 comes up. PCIe0 goes to AMC connector which TI doesn't enable it.The EVM boot shows pcie1 up.

    The "phy link never came up" could be caused by serdes failing due to hardware issue, or handshaking failure which could be hardware too.

    I dump the PCIe1 Serdes registers. Though the kernel shows it is up and lspci can see the endpoint, but the status register isn't the value I expected. I expect to see the least significant octet be 0x03. I can't explain it.

  • Hi Rex, yes, the SerDes firmware is loaded correctly.

    When the kernel / Serdes / HW is configured correctly but no slave card is plugged in what should we be seeing? Should the PHY be brought up in this case? Any hints as to what kind of HW issues could affect this?

    This is the part of dmesg about pcie:

  • Hi, Giannis,

    The following line tried to read the register from 0x02620240. In memory map, it is IPCGR0.

    [ 1.421336] gpio-syscon 2620240.keystone_dsp_gpio: can't read the dir register offset!

    Can you take a look at how pcie_devid is configured? I wouldn't expect it gets changed because default configuration is at 0x128.

    pcie_devid: pcie-devid@128 {
    compatible = "syscon";
    reg = <0x00000128 0x4>;
    };

    However, I can't find the register at this offset in the datasheet. I'll check internally to see if this is something we missed in the document.

    Rex

  • Hi, Giannis,

    I just looked up the code, it should be the following configuration and I don't expect it gets changed in your configuration.

    keystone-k2e.dtsi: gpio,syscon-dev = <&devctrl 0x240>;

    I am adding debug code to see what I am getting.

    Rex

  • Here is the debug print I have and no problem reading it:

    However, in your logs, PCIe1 doesn't have the issue to read at 0x02620240, but can't find reset-gpios. It is a bit odd.

    Rex

  • Hi Rex,

    I don't think the error with the dir register or the reset gpios are the cause here, because I tried again booting the K2E-EVM via NFS using the SDK 6.03 and although these errors appear, PCIE1 works (Phy link OK and SATA controller detected)

    I tried enabling PCIE0 via the dts for K2E-EVM to see what would be reported for this PCIE controller where no slave devices are connected, and the kernel log for PCIE0 is the same as with our custom board:

  • Hi Rex,

    turns out there was a problem with the PCIE0/1 clock supply to the SoC, after fixing that the PHY link comes up.

    Thank you for the support.

  • Hi, Giannis,

    Thanks for letting me know.

    Rex

  • Hi again Rex,

    we managed to get an Intel WiFi mini-pcie card working but have problems with an Atheros WiFi card that uses the Ath9K driver. dmesg shows some generic pcie erros:

    [    9.175320] ath9k 0001:01:00.0: enabling device (0140 -> 0142)
    [    9.191911] ath9k 0001:01:00.0: limiting MRRS to 256

    [    9.205536] ath9k: probe of 0001:01:00.0 failed with error -22

    Note I have included the required firmware file for the ath9K wifi card.

    lspci shows the device correctly but with IRQ 0

    Any hints?

  • Hi, Giannis,

    That MRRS message may mean something. Let me dig through my emails. Internally, I've seen something related to it, but can't remember what content it is and the issue with it. It may not related to yours, but give me some time to dig through the pile and get back to you.

    Rex

  • Hi, Giannis,

    Do you mind posting the output from lspci -vv?

    Rex

  • Hi Rex, thank you for the response!

    I got it working by loading ath9k with use_msi=1.

    I'm attaching the output of lspci with and without use_msi=1

  • Hi, Giannis,

    Interesting. In the past, I've seen issues with MRRS or MPS. But I saw symptoms are different. Your logs indicated atheros failed during probing and on irq setup.Glad to hear you got it resolved.

    Rex

  • Hi Giannis,

    What was the issue and how did you fix this?

    Thanks in advance,
