TMS320C6424: TI DSP TMS320C6424ZWTQ6

Part Number: TMS320C6424
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: 66AK2G12

Hi ,

We use Ti DSP TMS320C6424ZWTQ6 as host processor + DSP functions. It is relatively old and uses DDR2 memory.

I would like to know please:

  1. What is the projected longevity. Can we rely on TI to manufacture it for more than 15 years ?

  2. In case we will be able to move in new project to newer processor. What processor is recommended which will have minimal effect on software transfer from the current processor to the new platform?

We currently use the following DSP functions: one MCBSP but prefer 2 MCBSPs. EMAC+MDIO, EDMA3, I2C , SPI, use code composer 8.3

Thanks

  Avner

  • Hello Avner

    Thank you for your post.

Are you seeing challenges with procuring DDR2 memory?

    >>What is the projected longevity. Can we rely on TI to manufacture it for more than 15 years ?

Product longevity is important to TI and its customers. We recognize that our products are sold to a wide variety of customers and used in a wide range of applications with expected production lifetimes often in excess of several years, including industrial, medical, and automotive applications.

We are dedicated to meet customer needs and, as such, we employ strategies such as inventory management and multiple sourcing tactics to address continuity.

Here is an external link to TI's GQC (General Quality Guidelines)

You can look at the documents as well as FAQ on product withdrawl and discontinuance. I hope this helps.

In most of our newer devices that are coming out in 16nm , we do not have the McBSP peripheral. We typically have McASP.

If McBSP is a must , i recommend evaluating the C665x family

If McBSP is not a must , you can also evaluate the 66AK2G12 family

    https://www.ti.com/product/66AK2G12

    Both of these processor families

    1) Have a c66x core running at 1GHz , you will have the software compatibility with the c64x+ core on C6424

    2) Do have EMAC+MDIO and EDMA3

    3) Are supported in the latest processor sdk offering

    4) Both are NOT Q100. If you need automotive qualified devices , you can evaluate the AM572x family. K2G is available in extended temperature - 125C.

    5) Both families do support DDR3

    Hope this helps.
