AM 1808: Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM1808, OMAP-L138, DA8XX, PMP

Dear all,

I'm working on the AM1808 eXperimenter Kit.

During booting the kernel, it seems that mounting file system via NFS failed. i got the following message: "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root".

I'm using "DaVinci-PSP-SDK-03.20.00.14". my desktop machine is Ubuntu 11.04 - Natty Narwhal .

please advice

Nissim.

Desktop NFS configuration:

1. /etc/default/nfs-kernel-server:

# Number of servers to start up
RPCNFSDCOUNT=8

# Runtime priority of server (see nice(1))
RPCNFSDPRIORITY=0

# Options for rpc.mountd.
# If you have a port-based firewall, you might want to set up
# a fixed port here using the --port option. For more information,
# see rpc.mountd(8) or http://wiki.debian.org/?SecuringNFS
RPCMOUNTDOPTS=--manage-gids

# exports. Valid alternatives are "yes" and "no"; the default is "no".

2. /etc/default/nfs-common

# If you do not set values for the NEED_ options, they will be attempted
# autodetected; this should be sufficient for most people. Valid alternatives
# for the NEED_ options are "yes" and "no".

# Do you want to start the statd daemon? It is not needed for NFSv4.
NEED_STATD=

# Options for rpc.statd.
#   Should rpc.statd listen on a specific port? This is especially useful
#   when you have a port-based firewall. To use a fixed port, set this
#   this variable to a statd argument like: "--port 4000 --outgoing-port 4001".
#   For more information, see rpc.statd(8) or http://wiki.debian.org/?SecuringNFS

  • Are you certain that NFS service is running on your Ubuntu machine?

    $ ps -e | grep nfs

    Run this command to check if NFS service is configured  to run:

    $ chkconfig | grep nfs

  • Dear Sanjeev

    i'm sure that my nfs server is running.

    please advice

    Nissim.

  • Few things to try on you NFS server:

    1) Check rpc service is started

    $ rpcinfo -p

    2) Try changing the export line as:

    /home/nissim/Projects/TI_AM1808/workdir/filesys *(rw,no_root_squash,sync)

  • Dear Sanjeev,

    1). I think rpc service is working (this is what i got):

    nissim@BejaGroup:~$ rpcinfo -p

        100005    3   udp  43298  mountd
        100005    3   tcp  51894  mountd

    2). I changed in etc export according to your recommendation but it doesn't help.

    In addition, i think the problem concern the NFS ports since the target looking port 100003/2 of RPC on the server.

    Best regards,

    Nissim

  • I solved the problem,

    everything was setup correctly. by mistake i forgot to export the shares by using - sudo exportfs -ra

    Nissim.
