TMDX654GPEVM: PRU2 eth0/eth1 not working

Part Number: TMDX654GPEVM

Hi,

With pre-built images from sdk version "ti-processor-sdk-linux-am65xx-evm-07_00_01_06" , there is a crash from the driver so PRU2 ethernet is not working.

Attaching the complete crash log from evm as well.

Could anyone help in figuring out what could be the issue?

note: We are using PG1.0 sysfw

    Do you have more than one board to test?  I'm not sure if it is something wrong with the card itself or something with your board.  I compared your log with mine and observed:

    1. For some reason the on-board EEPROM is not programmed on your board. As a result you see "Reading on-board EEPROM at 0x50 failed -1".  Shortly after you get a warning "Warning: pruss2_eth (eth1) using random MAC address - aa:58:0c:4f:e9:0e".  I wouldn't expect that to completely break things however.  Can you check to see what board revision  you have?  It should be printed on the PCB itself.  Mine says "PCB REV: E3".

    2.  I observe some minor timing differences in the time stamps and sometimes events completing in slightly different order, but I didn't see anything that looked related to the ICSSG failure.

    Were things working properly with earlier SDK versions?  Have you tried recreating the SD card?

    Best regards,
    Brad

  • Hi Brad,

    Thanks for your reply.

    I have used following procedure :

    1. Downloading and  Installing SDK :

    a. Download sdk from following link :

    b.  => chmod +x /home/administrator/Downloads/ti-processor-sdk-linux-am65xx-evm-07_00_01_06-Linux-x86-Install.bin
         => cd /home/administrator/Downloads
         => ./ti-processor-sdk-linux-am65xx-evm-07_00_01_06-Linux-x86-Install.bin

    2. Creating sd card

    => cd sdk-install-dir/bin
    => sudo ./mksdboot.sh --device /dev/sdb --sdk "/home/administrator/ti-processor-sdk-linux-am65xx-evm-07_00_01_06"

    3. In sd card boot partition renamed  "sysfw-am65x-evm.itb" to "sysfw.itb"  (removed previous sysfw.itb)

    4. please find log as below:

  • Hi Brad,

    In earlier SDK (ti-processor-sdk-linux-am65xx-evm-06.02.00.81) Those ports are working fine.

    I am using the same version "PCB REV: E3".

    Regards,

    N Chetan Kumar

  • It looks like it crashes in the exact same place each time.  Using the objdump utility to disassemble that file, it looks like the crash happens near these lines:

    /* get mac address from DT and set private and netdev addr */
    mac_addr = of_get_mac_address(eth_node);
    if (mac_addr)
    ether_addr_copy(ndev->dev_addr, mac_addr);
    if (!is_valid_ether_addr(ndev->dev_addr)) {
    eth_hw_addr_random(ndev);
    dev_warn(prueth->dev, "port %d: using random MAC addr: %pM\n",
    port, ndev->dev_addr);
    }
    ether_addr_copy(emac->mac_addr, ndev->dev_addr);

    I was looking at recent commits in the TI tree, and there is a fix related to these lines of code:

    https://git.ti.com/cgit/ti-linux-kernel/ti-linux-kernel/commit/drivers/net/ethernet/ti/icssg_prueth.c?h=ti-linux-5.4.y&id=f4f26dcb6290d66a0f1c5299c574c7736e326708&context=3&ignorews=0&dt=0

    Can you apply that patch and see if that fixes things?  If it doesn't fix things, can you please add a few extra prints so we can identify precisely where the issue occurs?

    Thanks,
    Brad

  • Hi Brad,

    I have applied the patch. After build I have taken boot log and compared with previous log. There is no change between both logs, only order of lines changed.

    I was debugging by adding prints in "icssg_prueth.c". Please provide any input to debug this issue.

    Please let me know if you are able to reproduce the issue.

    Regards,

    N Chetan Kumar

  • Were you able to identify exactly where the crash is occurring?  Can you please attach your log that contains the extra prints?

  • Chetan -- it looks like you have marked the thread as resolved.  Can you please confirm that's the case?  Your previous response indicated the issue was still present, so I'm not sure whether you still need help with this issue or not.

    Thanks!
    Brad

  • Hi Brad,

    This patch helped to resolve the crash.

    Previously,cssg_prueth was loaded as module in default kernel configuration file,

    After enabling following configurations in kernel,

    TI_ICSSG_PRUETH
    PRU_REMOTEPROC
    TI_PRUSS
    TI_PRUSS_INTC

    and applied your patch upon that.

    we have verified ethernet is working on evm.

    After changes , we are getting following line multiple times in log, Is this expected or do you have any idea on this?

          "irq_pruss_intc: exports duplicate symbol pruss_intc_configure (owned by kernel)"

    We have verified on custom board as well, we have modified phy address in custom board then borts are working and links are up.

    But we observed dynamic addresses are not setting, so verified with static ip.Do you have any idea on this?

  • Why did you change this from a module to built-in?  I was expecting you would apply the patch, rebuild the module, and update the module.  I expect the duplicate symbol is because you still have the old unpatched version in your file system.

    Chetan Kumar2 said:

    Dynamic IP addresses?  DHCP is not working?  Or are you still talking about the MAC address?  DHCP is working fine on my board.  I was able to bring up the interface, receive an IP address, and talk to other devices on the network (ping, mount network storage, etc.).

  • Hi Brad,

    Thank you for input.

    "Duplicate symbols" warning was eliminated.If I use icssg-prueth as module and after replacing compiled module in rootfs.

    DHCP is working properly in evm, In our custom board we are facing issue. Static address is working fine in custom board,we are able to communicate with other devices on same network.

    Need some input on DHCP, why it is not working on custom board?

    Regards,

    N Chetan Kumar

  • Chetan,

    Please start a new thread for the DHCP issue.  You will get a slightly different audience for issues in DHCP (upper level stack) compared to your initial issue which was very low level.

    One quick suggestion to include in your new thread is to use wireshark to see if the DHCP request is actually being sent over the network, and/or how it differs from the working DHCP in the EVM.

    Best regards,
    Brad
