how can I change the boot progress image which is the "ti logo"?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OMAP-L138, AM3354, AM1808

Hello:-)

I ready to release a OMAP-L138 based product.

so, I want to change the "TI logo" to our company logo.
(it is not to mean the "boot logo-penguin")

but I don't know where to be modified.

Could you give me a tip?

Thank you for your concern.

  • Hello,

DVSDK root filesystem uses psplash utility [1] to show the boot progress with TI logo on it, and the bitmap picture is embedded inside the binary itself hence you may need to download psplash version and cross compile with your company logo. Please refer the psplash web page for more information.

    Thanks

  • Thank you for your knowledge sharing.

however,  howto-cross-compiling the psplash is not much on web.

first of all I have removed psplash-ti.

but I hope to use psplash.

  • Try these steps:

    1. Set the cross compile environment properly, based on the toolchain you are using. This means setting variables CC, LD, AS, OBJCOPY, etc.

    2. Run this command:

    # autogen.sh

    3. Assuming that you'd like to: keep psplash in "/usr/bin" of target filesystem, run the following command.

    # ./configure --shared --prefix=/usr

You may want to confirm the location of psplash in current filesystem that you are planning to customize.

    4) Build it.

    # make

    5) Install it to a local path.

    # make install DESTDIR=./_install

    6) Move the contents of _install directory to the target filesystem.

Since you are modifying the contents of an existing filesystem - rather than creating new one, i would recommend using the same toolchain that was used to create the original filesystem.

  • Hi Sanjeev,

I tryed to follow your tutorial, but without success. May you explain better about step 1 and where to find the sources to compile?

I used http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit/cgit.cgi/psplash/ source and  has no compatibility with your tutorial and when I try other source:

http://downloads.yoctoproject.org/releases/psplash/ that you told, but after compile this files, transfer and run on target, i receive an error like this:

./psplash: line 1: syntax error: word unexpected (expecting ")")

    what should I do?

    Thanks in advance!

  • I don't know if you still have this problem but I'll answer because a google search on this error lead me here.

You need to cross compile psplash, i.e. edit your makefile and replace the generic gcc compiler with the one you're using.

  • Hi Sanjeev,

We are using AM3354 processor [OMAP 2 of TI] , Arago file system. We are using the same file system source of TI (with out doing any further changes and build  process)  as it is.

    I followed all your steps

1.I downloaded the psplash source from http://downloads.yoctoproject.org/releases/psplash/

    2. I replaced psplash-hand-img.h with newly created my_logo.h

    3. The downloaded source does not having autogen.sh. So i skipped the above mentioned step 2

    4. As i am going to place the "psplash" in /usr/bin of target file system i did the same like you mentioned. But i got error like

    root@gnh-desktop:/home/vignesh/psplash/psplash-0.1# ./configure --shared --prefix=/usr
configure: error: expected an absolute directory name for --sharedstatedir: --prefix=/usr

    5. So i used the step like below

    ./configure ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=arm-arago-linux-gnueabi-gcc

This is worked and Makefile is created

    6. next  make install DESTDIR=./_install followed by make

    7. pslash and psplash-write  files are created inside ./_install/usr/local/bin

8.Then i replaced the psplash in the target file system /usr/bin

After these steps, when the file system is booting in board, i cannot see my company logo but the TI logo and progress bar is not displayed.(A blank screen upto the filsystem fully booted) So please let me know where i did the mistake..?

    a. Where should i replace the newly created "psplash" in the target file system...?

    b. Is there any issue because i skipped the autogen.sh step (Because autogen.sh is not available in download source)...?

    c.Problem in ./configure step ..?

    d. Should i rebuild the file system or problem in the downloaded pslash tool...?

    Thanks in Advance

    Vignesh

  • Hello, Brijesh Singh!

Your link on [1] is valid? I can' get access to this site.

    Thank you.

  • Hi Sanjeev,

    1. I generated my company logo psplash file

    2. In my board target file system

    root@gnh-desktop:/home/vignesh/filesystem# ls -al usr/bin/ | grep psplash
    lrwxrwxrwx  1 root root      27 2013-01-23 16:19 psplash -> /usr/bin/psplash.psplash-ti
    -rwxr-xr-x  1 root root  154901 2013-01-23 16:24 psplash.psplash-ti

Here the "psplash" file is linked with the psplash.psplash-ti. so i renamed my own logo psplash file as "psplash.psplash-ti" and copied to the usr/bin/ of target file system

Even though i am getting the same blank screen. I noticed an error log while the file system is loading..

    INIT: version 2.86 booting

    /usr/bin/psplash: line 1: syntax error: "(" unexpected

    Please clarify me to proceed

    Regards,

    Vignesh

  • Hello Dear

    I am working on AM1808

while booting I got the booting bar wit ti logo , I want to remove that ti logo

for that as suggested by yu I have downloaded the source code for psplash.

but I am not able to compile it.

will you please suggest me the steps to compile it for am1808

    thanks

  • Vignesh,

I know this happens when the target you're compiling for is different from the one you're running the binary file, ie again a cross compiling issue.

Can you confirm you are using the correct compiling tool?

Harnek, could you post your compiling log? it would help.

  • thanks for reply

    I have compiled it

  • find ./kernel | grep logo

    GIMP edit it.

  • Hi Harnek,

I can able to compile two files named  psplash and psplash-wirte created in usr/local/bin but there is some problem regarding execution it not excuted while Booting when i replacing it with new psplash in rootfs.  .

When I have seen the permission of psplash (ti-sdk  in root/usr/bin) it is lrwxrwxrwx that is it is linking to  psplash-default what does it mean ? it is excuting the content of psplash-default or there is some diffrent ?

Is there a way to create psplash that is excutable on my device pls tell me

    Praveen

  • Hello Parveen

you can use these steps to compile psplash for your device and make exe torun on your device

    1.Download source code of psplash

    2. cd to that source code folder

    3. configure with command

./configure --host=arm-linux CC= path to compiler you are using for your device

    4. make

after that two files psplash and psplash-write exe are there in the folder you can run psplash exe on your device

  • Hello Harnek ,

Thanks for your Reply  As u suggested I performed the same and I can see my logo as boot Screen Could it is possible to see progressing Bar :

    Thanks Alot  for Your Support;

    Praveen

  • Hello Parveen

there are two files after compiling

one is psplash and other is psplash-write

if you run psplash-write then you can see that progress bar

also tell me on which processor you are working
