AM5K2E04: interfacing SGMII with OPTICAL FIBER

Part Number: AM5K2E04

Hello,

I look over many AN, UG, but nothing clear for me about this topic.

I would like to use AM5K2E04  for Ethernet optical fiber application.

Our optical  tranceiver is something like RCP-5G-SX-DX  from cotsworks or equvalent,

What is not clear for me is if I can connect directly SGMII interfaces on it, or if I need to use a PHY Tranceiver for that.

May you  give  an recommendation or point me  an Application Note on such application.

Best Regards,

Eric

  • Eric,

There are 2 answers here.  Electrically, the signals are compatible and you could make this work by enabling the transmitters from both ends and force the link to be functional.  However, this is not compliant to the functional layers of the Ethernet implementation.  The fiber and the fiber transceiver are the Ethernet transmission medium.  SGMII is an interface standard for connecting an Ethernet MAC to an Ethernet PHY.  It includes an auto-negotiation capability that is not compatible with the fiber transceiver.  Therefore, your system needs to contain a Fiber PHY between the SGMII port on the K2E device and your fiber transceiver.

Please see the E2E link below.  There is an article from GE Fanuc that clearly explains this issue.  You can search the Internet for it and access it directly.
