Platform selection for new drone survey device

I am helping establish a reliable drone survey product, performing low-bandwidth sense operations and image detection for on-board analytics. This unit responds to what it reports, performing control & maintenance when needed.

Unit:

  • Drone w/steer & control`
  • Image capture & analysis
  • General sense, comm(RF/BT) & GPS
  • Low power (e.g. for the proc, ~4-6 hours on 2000mAh?)

Services:

  • Route Navigation
  • Obstacle detection & avoidance
  • Survey Image Analytics (AI request)
  • Liquid dispense on request
  • System network integration
What options do you recommend for solution? I see the Sitara matches well, was curious on your options available with DSP/Processing Units
  • We would need a little more information in terms of the ARM and the DSP performance needed in your product. Please also provide how many camera inputs, what network capability and list the peripherals that you need to implement the features in the product. Also, indicate from software perspective, if you need ARM Linux support in the product  or RTOS support in development of your product. Is there a general cost budget for the processor ?

BAsed on the high level general view of you application, I would recommend looking at AM57x series of devices which is single A15 + C66x. TDA3x and TDA4x is also another option to look at. TDA4x is the latest devices that we have with great integration but you will need to do power estimation for the part to know if it can run 4-6 hours with 2 Amps of power.

    Rahul

  • Hi Rahul,
You share excellent points, with clear articulation -

    Operations:
        - Image Processing using AI algorithms
        - Obstacle Detection
        - Obstacle Avoidance
        - Robot Control
        - Sensing

    Features:
        - 2-4 cameras (4 iff possible)
        - Network: Custom-RF & Bluetooth
        - Peripherals:    Memory (sensing storage)
                        Comm (SPI/I2C)
                        ADC

    Cost:
        - "Raspberry Pi" was the general estimate I established

    Notes:
        - Linux is needed, RTOS for consideration with robot controls for reliability

Your references suggested are great, thank you! Sharing with the team next, thank you for your help here Rahul

  • Justin,

Thanks for providing more details. My current recommendations still are valid. For development platform, you can either use AM572x GP EVM or TDA2x EVM for development.

    Regards,

    Rahul

  • This team is looking for support of (4) cameras, sequential operation may be considered if necessary. The image processing is fully offline, with remote bots scanning a region and WiFi/BT is generally considered for operator interface. BT-mesh is of consideration.

Cost budget is - "something comparative to the ESP32"... take that as you will

Thank you for the power estimates and detailed response this is what we needed, much appreciated!
