C6A816x DDR2 EVM boot issue (from SD card): cannot connect to NFS server

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PMP

Hi,

I boot the C6A816x evm from the sd card shipped with the board but can't connect to nfs server.

I can ping the NFS server. I can boot  another evm (6467T) without any problem.

TI8168_EVM#dhcp

BOOTP broadcast 2
DHCP client bound to address 192.168.2.3
TI8168_EVM#ping 192.168.2.1
Using DaVinci EMAC device
host 192.168.2.1 is alive

I setted U-boot parameters as follows

mmc init
fatload mmc 1 0x81000000 uImage

setenv bootargs 'console=ttyS2,115200n8 root=/dev/nfs
nfsroot=192.168.2.1:/home/ubuntu/workdir/filesystem,
nolock ip=dhcp rw mem=128M'

bootm 0x81000000

and I get this

C6A816x/AM386x evaluation module

Ubuntu 10.4

  • We were also having problems connecting to an NFS server from our Integra dev board. We could ping both ways and telnet from the server to the board, so the network connection was good. Here is the command we were trying and the error message returned:

    root@c6a816x-evm:/mnt# mount -o nolock -t nfs 192.168.111.180:/home/user/targetfs /mnt/targetfs
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on 192.168.111.180:/home/user/,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error
(for several filesystems (e.g. nfs, cifs) you might
           need a /sbin/mount.<type> helper program)
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
           dmesg | tail  or so

After some digging, I discovered we could add "busybox" before mount and it works. Not yet sure why "busybox" is necessary, so I will need to do some more digging.

    busybox mount -o nolock -t nfs 192.168.111.180:/home/user/targetfs /mnt/targetfs

  • Aaron,

Thanks for the tip, it works fine with my evm as well.

  • I'm at home but looking at your cmdline (and going off memory) , the only difference I see between what you are doing and my setup (which works) is I didn't do ip=dhcp.  I specified the target IP, netmask etc.

Did you also remember to restart NFS so it would pick up your exported path to the rootfs you are trying to use?

I'll post my cmdline that works with NFS when I get back to work in case that might help.

    Regards,

  • Brian,

Could you post your cmdline please.

    Thanks

  • Sorry for the delay,

Here is the actual boot script I'm using:

    setenv bootargs 'console=ttyS2,115200n8 root=/dev/nfs rw nfsroot=192.168.1.5:/home/hutch/downloads/Integra/rootfs mem=166M earlyprink vram=50M ti816xfb.vram=0:16M,1:16M,2:6M ip=192.168.1.1:192.168.1.5::255.255.255.0 noinitrd'
    fatload mmc 1 0x80009000 uImage
    bootm 0x80009000

192.168.1.1 is my evm and 192.168.1.5 is my nfs host.

Here is the matching line in my /etc/exports:

    /home/hutch/downloads/Integra/rootfs/ *(rw,no_root_squash,no_all_squash,async)

Notice that I don't currently have the 'rootwait' option on the kernel cmd line but if I did it would go at the end.  About the only time I've needed that option is if I'm using something with a USB->Ethernet like the beagleboard xD etc.  The USB needs time to enumerate the PHY so you have to wait on that before trying to continue.

You have to take the boot script above and make a uboot script out of it and name it boot.scr and place it on the boot partition of the SD Card.

Generate the boot.scr this way for example:

    mkimage -A arm -T script -C none -d hutch_nfs_integra.cmd hutch_nfs_integra.scr (then I copied hutch_nfs_integra.scr to /media/BOOT/boot.scr)

There is an example of making a uboot script in the file README.boot.scr (in BOOT partition) that should have came on your SD Card.

Another note.  I recently bitbaked the latest Arago image and the kernel that came with the board (2.6.34 if my memory is right) wouldn't boot with the new root filesystem I just generated.  I had to replace my uImage on my SD Card with the new Arago 2.6.36_2.6.37 kernel and then everything was happy.

    Hope it helps.

    Regards,

    Brian
