h.264 frame encode time too long

I use the DM6467 with h.264 encoder version 01.10.01.

I use the TI's encode demo to record the time taken to encode frames for a specific video I have.

I do this by taking time snapshots before and after the call to 'Venc1_process'.

From what I see, time taken in most cases is around 16 ms, but there are specific scenes where the time to encode is around 60 ms(!).

Is it a normal behavior of the encoder?

Encoder process call time at the HDVICP layer will be pretty much same for different frame, it cannot vary to the level which you are saying. Maybe something to do with the overall app. Will be moving this post to Linux forum for more thoughts from DVSDK experts.

I also want to note that when encoding time is long, the number of bytes output from the encoder is much larger than the normal case, which can be a reason for the increased time.

Am I right?

Here are the few points added along with the points added by Yashwant,

In the version 1.10.01 which you are using has no control over the no of slices the encoder generates when the h241 spec is enabled and with scene change. Hence, encoder might take more time for such scenarios and this is a known issue with this version of the release. However the overall average encoding time is 33ms. This issue has been fixed in the latest release version "1.10.02.05" of the code base. So better to use this version of the release to resolve this issue.

Regarding the new codec version, on TI codec site http://software-dl.ti.com/dsps/dsps_public_sw/codecs/DM6467/index_FDS.html latest version of h264 encoder is 1.10.02.03. Does this version also resolve this issue?

Yes, this release version will resolve this issue, however it's better to take the latest release version 1.10.02.05 as few more issues have been fixed. We will try to upload the latest release version and let you know about the same.

Thank you, but I can see the it also requires HDVICP version 1.01.020 which is not available on that page. Where can I download it?
