Wi-Fi module off during suspend

Hi all,

Is it possible to keep off the radio module during suspend state with the AM37x board running ANDROID 2.2, just to reduce power consumption?

This is just the default behavior in the WINDOWSCE operating system. is it possible to have the same also in ANDROID?

Thx!

Marco

  • We are working on power management in android. Will keep you posted when any update is available

  • Hello Marco,

The current release is on FroYo, we are coming up with a Gingerbread release by end of this month. We are doing aggressive PM this time to include CPU IDLE, suspend, resume, DVFS and offmode.

We do test all on board "EVM" peripherals, as we don't have Radio interface we might not be able to test the same. We can definitely work with you to make it work for you for any known issues.

In most of our TI OMAP3 based phones we do have radio enabled and has been working on similar Android RIL, we can check with them as well.

Overall, it should work, we would like you to test the same, if you find any issues we will work with you in getting this addressed.

Let me know if you have any issues.

    Regards,

    Khasim

  • this is very interesting

so are you going to release 2.3 by March?

does it exist a standard way in Android/Linux to say which devices have to be powered off during suspend and which devices have to be keeped on?

    example:

    LCD off during suspend

    BACKLIGHT off during suspend

    AUDIO off during suspend

    Wi-Fi off during suspend

    GSM on during suspend

    M

  • Yes, we are releasing 2.3 by 30th March.

Our drivers have suspend function implemented which gets called from PM layers, all the drivers that are registered with Suspend will go into suspend state.

The policy is defined for almost all drivers for us, I think we miss this for Wifi today.

GSM as mentioned before, we don't have this in EVM so cannot comment.

We have tested Audio, LCD, LCD backlight, TS, Console, MMC/SD, NAND, USB, Keyboard,

  • so if you are able to switch off the SDIO interface as the Wi-Fi radio module is connected to the SDIO interface of the AM37x what will happen to the WiFi driver?

does it unload the Wi-Fi driver from memory?

    M

  • The wi-fi driver is loaded into memory when the user enables wi-fi through the android UI (Menu->Settings->Wireless & networks->Wi-Fi settings) and it gets unloaded when wi-fi is disabled.
