NAND boot very slow. Speed up?

Now that my custom DM6467T seems to be working, I find that when it boots totally from NAND (ubl/uboot/kernel/fs), it's VERY slow.  It takes 2 to 2.6 MINUTES between power on to video output.  Why?

I need to do more detailed timing to find where it's slowing down the most, but one distinct place is in the load of a codec server of a single codec.  With NFS as root FS, the codec load took perhaps 15 to 30 seconds.  Now, with NAND fs as root, it takes up to a minute, perhaps more.  Why?

More importantly, is there something I can do about this?  For one, I'll try trimming the kernel down to the essentials.  But otherwise, what can I do to speed up this process?

Thanks in advance for your help,

Helmut
