ThreadX support for AM3892

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AM3892

We have a customer considering the pros/cons of Threadx/Linux for development on the AM3892. The development schedule is a concern, and they are wondering if ThreadX is worth the price. ExpressLogic claims to support C6x devices:

...but I was hoping for an experienced opinion. Anyone have anything good or bad to say about ThreadX support? Or is this too much of an "it depends..."?

thanks

  • Patrick:

When you say ThreadX/Linux, I assume you mean ThreadX v. Linux on the ARM processor.

The main issue would be ThreadX bsp availability. The cost and schedule for that would depend on which peripherals are required. Currently ThreadX doesn't have any AM389x bsp. I am only aware of one RTOS vendor who does. This is a pretty new part and the production EVMs have been limited in availability.

ExpressLogic, the company behing ThreadX, has been in buisness for a long-time so I believe their products are pretty solid. The main benefits to the customers of using ThreadX compared to Linux would be real-time performance and reduced footprint.

Thanks Nick, that certainly helps. Can you tell me which RTOS vendor provides the BSP you mentioned?

Green Hills currently has a base port of Integrity. This currently features just the kernel, a time driver, and their networking stack, wiht an Ethernet driver. They are waiting on definite customer interest before adding further driver support.

There are two other RTOS companies - QNX and Wind River - who have done/are doing ports to another device that is very similar to the AM389x. These ports will have pretty comprehensive peripheral support. However, you would have to discuss with them their plans for when they might support the AM389x with standard products.

It might be helpful to understand which peripherals you would need support for. This would determine the effort to so the BSP.

I can potentially provide contacts at these companies if you want to look at them more seriously.
