AWR1243: Development of Radar Object detection module using awr1243 with tda3x

Part Number: AWR1243

Hello,

In our project we want to develop a radar sensor AWR1243 + TDA3x based Object detection application.  I just started to work in this field. It would be really helpful if you answer my silly questions.

We have the AWR1243BOOST EVM with us. Can you let us know how can we interface AWR1243BOOST with TDA3x EVM ? What are the exact hardware boards required?

We would like implement the usecases provided in Radar SDK. We went through the document ... ProcessorSDKRadar_UserGuide.pdf and had follow doubts:

In the RADAR Usecase, 'TDA3xx EVM + DIB + VAB + AWR12 Booster Pack' :

What does DIB mean and what is its significance?

What does VAB mean and what is its significance?

AWR12 Booster Pack -----> does this mean only AWR1243BOOST EVM or something else?

Hardware required to implement the use case ----> Radar(Single AR1243) Capture + Radar Object Detect (EVE1) + Display (TDA3xx Only)

---------> Can we used AWR1243BOOST EVM with TDA3x EVM ... or do we need something extra ??

In the RADAR Usecase, 'TDA3xx RVP' :

What does RVP mean and what is its significance?

Hardware required to implement the use case ----> Radar(Single AR1243) Capture + Radar Object Detect (EVE1) + Display (TDA3xx Only)

---------> Can we used AWR1243BOOST EVM with TDA3x EVM ... or do we need something extra ??

Ganesh

  • Hi,

I will move this thread to the TDAx forum which supports the radar SDK

    thank you
    Cesar
  • Hi Ganesh,

In the RADAR Usecase, 'TDA3xx EVM + DIB + VAB + AWR12 Booster Pack' requires multiple boards.

AWR12 Booster Pack is the AWR1243BOOST EVM.

In addition, 2 more interface boards (DIB & VAB) are also required.

Please refer to the Radar SDK user guide Ch 2.3.1 for details.

DIB and VAB are not available from TI.COM. Please contact local FAE for the availability of the boards.

Once you have the required HW, you can execute all the use cases, except satellite radar use case since it is for a different set of HW.

TDA3 RVP is another variant of TDA3 EVM. It is available from D3 Engineering. Please visit D3 Engineering website for details.

TDA3 RVP is used for Satellite Radar use case. For this use case, D3 Satellite Radar (AWR1243 based) can be connected to TDA3 RVP over FPD-Link III.

  • Hello Stanley,

Thank you for your answer. You mentioned that AWR1243 can be interfaced with TDA3x via DIB and VAB boards and you said that both these boards are not available on TI.COM.  I have some querries about that.

    1. How these boards are interfaced with each other, with what connection. Is it CSI? Since it is not mentioned in the document, I just want to know how TDA3x connected with VAB board and then how VAB board is connected with DIB board and how DIB is connected with AWR1243.

    2. In document you mentioned, it shows the Texas instruments AR1243 VAB EVM board. If it is not available online now could you suggest which version of VAB and DIB boards are compatible for interfacing. There are ssome versions available online like VAB-600, VAB-820 but I am not sure if they are the right one.

    Regards,

    Swapnil

  • Hi Swapnil,

The VAB board is primarily for the GPIO, SPI communication interface. The DIB board has the CSI interface which is connected on the TDA3xx EVM directly.
Since these are custom created boards, I would encourage you to get in touch with your TI representative. The detailed schematics of the connections of these boards can be discussed through that channel.

Kindly note the DIB/VAB is only a stop gap solution for testing TDA3xx EVM with AWR1243 booster pack. For any further experimentation, I would recommend to try the D3 Engineering boards.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Piyali
  • Hello Piyali,

Thank you for replying to my querries. So if I understood correctly, VAB board is used for making SPI connection between TDA3xxEVM and AWR1243 and DIB board is used for CSI interface between TDA3xx and AWR1243.
I will now try to contact with my local TI representative.

    Regards,

    Swapnil

  • Hello.

I have a basic question regarding interfacing of AWR1243 and TDA3x. Both boards have SPI and CSI so why we need extra interfacing boards (DIB and VAB) in between.

    Regards,
    Swapnil
  • Hi Swapnil,

The connector on each EVM has different arrangement of the signals even though required SPI and CSI2 signals are presented.

The additional interface boards are just for routing the signals to the proper connector on each TDA3 EVM and AWR1243 Boost EVM.

    Regards,
    Stanley
