AWR1843: Problem to power down the DSS

Part Number: AWR1843
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR1642, , AWR6843

Hi

I follow SWRU520E AWR1xxx Technical Reference Manual 5.4.2 Power Domain Control to power off the DVT to reduce power consumption when I stop the Radar before next Radar Start , but I only can let the DSS state to 2"GEM transitioning from ON to OFF", I find the forum https://e2e.ti.com/support/sensors-group/sensors/f/sensors-forum/995504/iwr6843aop-dsp-power-management has the same problem but still did not get TI's answer, can you help to solve this problem?

  • I find the technical reference manual SWRU520E chapter 5.4 has a sentence "Switchable power domains are only for the 16xx device", is that mean the problem is caused I use AWR1843 not AWR1642? Is there any method to reduce most of the power consumption when Radar in Idle? For example halt BSS, power off the RF power rail from PMIC, Gate clock , reduce the MSS CPU clock or enter power down mode etc....?

    Thanks.

  • Hi,

Please give me some time to review the question

    Thank you

  • Hi Cesar

       Thanks for your quick response,

  • Hi,

First I wanted to give you some high level information.

AWR1843 supports powering down/up the DSP. This is the only power saving mechanism supported on this device.

AWR6843 supports several power saving mechanisms.

So, if it is possible we recommend you use teh AWR6843 in your application.

    Thank you

    Cesar

  • Hi

If I only can use AWR1843, do you have any example that I can power down the DSP, and how much current can reduce if I success power down the DSP?

I also try to direct power off the 1.0V from PMIC I2C interface, it reduce about 200mA from the PMIC input power (5V), the MSS and DSP still work but the CLI task seems very slow Task_Sleep(1000) may wait at least 20 minutes. But after I power on the PMIC 1.0V the task work well, and I re-program the configure profile and startSensor, the radar can work well. Power off/on the 1.0V will damage the AWR1843? How to solve the task run very slow when 1.0V power off ( I just need a timer to power on the 1.0V again after I power off 1.0V)

What kind of power saving mechanisms? where I can find such kind of document?

    Thanks

  • Hi,

If I only can use AWR1843, do you have any example that I can power down the DSP, and how much current can reduce if I success power down the DSP?

We performed some experiments internally. Powering down the DSP saves about 100mW

Can you please start a new thread regarding the PMIC changes? This would have to be assigned to the HW team. I don't think this is recommended.

For more information regarding the AWR6x low power mode mechanisms please see below. These mechanisms are ONLY availble on AWR6x  not AWR18xx

For customers wanting to know how to operate the AWR6x devices in low power mode, the available knobs etc,  below lab is a good resource with example

o    New Lab demonstrating low power capabilities on the xWR6843/xWR6443 devices.

o    Lab is modification of 68xx Out-of-Box Demo - HWA version, but the included low power functions can be used in any xWR6843/xWR6443 project.

  • Hu Cesar

I had try the to use BSS halt ptrSOCDriverMCB ->ptrTopRCMRegs->BSSCTL=0xAD000000 before sensorStart, it can not reduce any current, I try to use  ptrSOCDriverMCB ->ptrTopRCMRegs->BSSCTL=0xAD0000AD; to let the reserve bit 7~bit 0 to 0xAD, after write it, the current is reduce from 250mA to 100mA immediately and MSS still work well, but can not do any setup for example any rlDevicexxxxx, or MMWave_open, I can not find any method how to let the BSS back to normal even though I let the MSS software reset, the MSS can start from main() after the software reset, but the power consumption still keep 100mA.

  • Cesar

Thanks, waiting your response, I really need your help to solve the power consumption problem.

  • Thank you,

Please remember that for AWR1843 the only way to save power is to power down the DSP. For AWR1843 it is not possible to power down the BSS

    Thank you
