AWR1843BOOST: recommendations & beginner help

Part Number: AWR1843BOOST

Hi,

Context: I am investigating/looking for a radar sensor that would be used on boats, from lakes (sailing) to open sea (larger crafts) --

A decent resolution below 100m is needed for detecting debris, but it is also desired to be able to detect large objects at 300m+ range.

(I have 30+ years of experience with mathematics & server/desktop programming, BUT I am completely new to anything hardware/firmware/sensor/physics-related applications.)

General Question: What kind of options do I have for sensors with this kind of use case? What should I be looking for? Do you have any recommendations?

AWR1843BOOST: I have at hand a AWR1843BOOST evaluation board, which where I've been using the mmwDemoVisualizer and I've also written my own visualizer using Python/Qt. I am using Linux. I can observe things at close range pretty easily but I don't get much sensible data after a couple of dozens of meters? Is this because I am failing to configure it properly? But I'm having trouble understanding most of the settings and how they relate to the data that comes out of those matrices (primarily focusing on range-doppler-heatmap and range-profiles). When experimenting with the configs, sometimes the sensor also refuses to start and I have no idea why -- I'm not sure where to look for documentation or error messages other than the MMW SDK, but I couldn't find anything there detailing all the possible config options.
