MMWCAS-DSP-EVM: Booting issue, no serial communication or Ethernet

Part Number: MMWCAS-DSP-EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: MMWCAS-RF-EVM, TDA2

Hello,

we purchased the MMWCAS-DSP-EVM and MMWCAS-RF-EVM eval boards about two weeks ago and were not able to boot the MMWCAS-DSP-EVM. We have followed all the instructions in mmwave_studio_cascade_user_guide.pdf, but the serial port communication returns a blank black screen, and it does not respond to pinging on the default IP address of 192.168.33.180 (the ethernet status lights are off on the board).

The voltages seem to be fine judging by the LEDs and some TP voltage measurements. I have also tried two different Windows PCs, different SD cards, and rewriting the SD card content. I have looked up the forum and there are many similar threads, such as:

MMWCAS-DSP-EVM: Problems with communicating to the board via ethernet and serial port - Sensors forum - Sensors - TI E2E support forums

Are there any more debugging steps we could do, or is the board defect and needs replacement?

Thanks.

  • Hi,

I believe you would have ascertained that the port of TDA2 is correctly mounted on the PC and identified too. The baud rate is another thing which needs to be ascertained. For the serial port log I don't think there is any thing additionally you need.

Now on the TDA2 boot, you need to ensure that the image on the sd card is correctly flashed.

If you have ascertained above points, then please recheck on the visual LED indications of the TDA2 board. You may first try to boot the TDA2 board alone and check and then try with Cascade EVM.

    Regards

  • Dear Misra,

thank you for your answer. I have already tried all the suggestions you have outlined without success. Here are all the experiments I have performed:

    - Matched the UART settings to the ones in the manual. Tried on PuTTY as well as Tera Term.

    - Checked that my FTDI drivers are up to date

    - My PC recognizes the board as COM3 and COM4 as the serial ports. I have also tried to use lower or higher enumerations. I also tried different baud-rates

    - Tried booting with a different SD card using BalenaEtcher software and the latest image from the ti/Mmwave_Studio folder

    - Tried booting the TDA2 board without the RF board

    - Measured voltages on some TP points, all look good and the LEDs are showing that the voltages are okay (see attached pic). I am using a 12V/5A supply.

    - Tried a different laptop

    - Checked that S4 switches are in the default positions.

Still, the serial communication presents a blank black screen and no Ethernet connectivity can be established (shows disconnected in the Windows network adapter settings, status TX/RX Ethernet LEDs are off on the board and it does not respond to pinging). Anything else I could try?

    Thanks!

  • We were able to finally make it work. The trick for us was to initiate a few PoR while the serial terminal session is open and waiting for a communication.

    Thank you for your assistance.
