OPT3101: how to use OPT3101 estimator

Dear team,

Now I'm studying how to use OPT3101 estimator, and I have a question.

In case of adding VCSEL device to LEDs by [Manage LEDs] menu, what parameter should I

input into Radiant Intensity(mW/sr) ?

I think most of VCSEL devices have optical output power[W] specified in their datasheet,

but no Radiant Intensity[mW/sr].

I don't think these parameters have same meaning, I wonder there are any method to

convert Optical Output Power into Radiant Intensity?

Hi,

Section 6.2.2 of Introduction to Time-of-Flight Long Range Proximity and Distance Sensor System (Rev. B) explains this unit of measurement. I'll keep looking into this and I will let you know if I can find a good way to convert them early next week.

Hi,

Do you know what model of VCSEL you want to use? Deriving radiant intensity from output power will depend on the angular radiant intensity so it won't be straight-forward to convert directly.

We haven't decided yet which VCSEL we'll use, but we're interested in some models bellow.

Model : CAS850150MW Manufacturer : VERTILITE

Model : CAC940D001 Manufacturer : VERTILITE

We'd like to know how long distance the system can detect with these VCSELS.

But I don't think I can convert from Optical Output Power of VCSELs to Radiant Intensity directly, neither.

Could you give me some advice to use OPT3101 to simulate with VCSELs with no Radiant Intensity

in their DATASHEET.

Hi,

If you are unable to get the radiant intensity for the VCSEL, you can use the simple model dropdown option in the Emitter Specs box, and you will only need to input the LED efficiency, half angle, and center wavelength.

Hi Brent,

Now I understand I can simulate using Simple Model for LED, and I have a basic question.

What's the difference between Simple Model for LED and Normal LED model?

Are there any differences on accuracy or reliability of simulation results between

using normal LED Model and using Simple LED Model?

Hi,

Adding an LED through the Manage LEDs menu allows you to input the complete spectral emission of the LED and the complete FOV. This will yield more precise results as the simple model will only ask for center wavelength and half-angle.
