IWR1443: Depth sensing through container

Hello,

I am trying to choose the best radar for my application.It needs to detect the water level in a water tank, but it has to be attached outside. It shall also be energy efficient. Is the IWR1443 a good choice? Or would a different sendor work better?

Hi Philip,

The IWR1443 is the best choice in terms of energy efficiency.

For the level sensing application, TI offers two demos:

High Accuracy Level Sensing Lab
1. Millimeter-grade accuracy.
Low Power Level Sensing Demo
1. This demo is only compatible with IWR1443, and has some additional hardware requirements.

I'm not sure if I completely understand your setup. Do you have a diagram that shows where the radar device will be mounted?

thank you for your swift response. The radar device will be mounted on top of the water tank, without interefering with its exterrior,

It will be in a robust case, going through the plastic container and pinging back from the water surface. Would the application be sufficient?

This looks fine to me. There is an experiment on the mmWave Industrial Toolbox that demonstrates the use of mmWave Radar sensing through different materials: https://dev.ti.com/tirex/explore/node?node=AIGhs1G9.vDk0do55-ytGw__VLyFKFf__LATEST

Notice that the 1/4" thick plexiglass (a plastic material) has no effect on the radar. Your application is sufficient.
