IWR1642: When several cars stop in line one after another, no point cloud appears for the parked cars behind

Part Number: IWR1642

Hello ,everyone.I think i need you help.Thanks!

When I used iwr1642 to track vehicles, I found that when multiple vehicles stopped in a lane one after another, except for the first two vehicles, point clouds appeared and tracking targets were displayed, no point clouds appeared when other vehicles stopped behind, which seemed to be obscured by the vehicles in front.

My tracking parameters setting is like this

The snrThreObserved in the above figure, in my understanding, is the minimum total signal to noise ratio when being masked. I tried to modify it to reduce the signal-to-noise ratio, but it didn't work. There was still no point cloud.

What improvements do I need to make if I want the vehicles in the queue behind to be detected?

ctc

  • Hi,

This will likely be most dependent on the mounting position of the radar module. Since vehicles are primarily metal, it may be challenging for any RF to penetrate through them well. The best way to avoid this is likely adjust mounting so that vehicles are less likely to be obstructed by each other, such as mounting higher up so that the radar still has line of sight on the roofs of each vehicle.

  • Hi,Alec.Thank you for your reply!

The radar installation position has been fixed, about 6 meters. Besides raising the installation height of radar, is there any way to improve this situation?

  • Hi ctc,

I have some questions to help me better understand your situation:

    1. Are you running demo software provided by TI or your own custom software? Which version of the mmWave Toolbox and mmWave SDK have you installed?
    2. What is configuration being used? Are you using a configuration provided by TI?
    3. Are the vehicles that you don't see points for completely obscured by other vehicles or only partially obscured?
    4. At what range are the vehicles that you don't see points for?

    Best Regards,
