LDC1612: coil diameter and detection distance.

Part Number: LDC1612

There is a question about coil diameter and detection distance.

Can the following two conditions of use achieve similar stability and detection accuracy?

1. Use a 20 mm diameter coil to detect 8mm in diameter;

1. Use a 13.9 mm diameter coil to detect 3mm in diameter;

  • Hello,

    When talking about resolution with these devices, it is important to note that you will get more change in the data when the target is closer to the sensor coil:

    We generally break this graph into 3 regions for different resolution requirements:

    • Target Distance is 3%-20% of the sensor coil diameter gives highest resolution
    • Target Distance is 20%-50% of the sensor coil diameter gives medium resolution
    • Target Distance is 50%-100% of the sensor coil diameter gives low resolution (usually presence detection of the target as a yes/no decision)

    The ratio of the target distance/sensor diameter is higher with the 20mm coil so it may have less resolution. Depending on how much resolution is needed in the application, the difference could result in not being able to detect as small of a change on the 8mm target distance.

    Another factor that can play into this is the size of the target. For more information on this, see this blog post.
