LDC3114: application question

Hi,

May I inquire whether TI's inductive sensor originally detects presses by utilizing the deformation of iron pieces on the PCB surface and the changes in the coils on the PCB?

If reversed, can PCB deformation and the iron pieces beneath achieve the same effect?

If not, does TI have other sensors available for detecting PCBA deformation?

  • Hello Jeff,

    Typically, an aluminum plate is deformed from a button push, which has a coil and LDC device under the aluminum plate, measuring the deflection of the aluminum plate(~10um).  The app note below discusses the details of such a design.

    I have not seen iron used as a target before.  For a PCB, there is typically a large copper GND or VCC plane that I think could potentially be a good conductive target material.  As mentioned in the app note, it is important to ensure that the coil is very close to the target to enable very high resolution.  Depending on the spacing and height of components on the PCB, I think what you are asking would be possible.  Do have a mechanical drawing of the PCB they would like to measure?  Do you also know how much deflection they would expect on the PCB?  A typical button press offers deflection of 20um to 50um, which is detectable with our LDC device.

    We have tried LDC3114 EVM board but meet some issue.

    below is OS and software information:

    Notebook: Dell vostro

    OS: Windows 10 professional 22H2

    TI PAMB CONTROLLER DC081A(001)

    TIM BOOST-LDC3114EVM SENS072

    PAMB USB driver sbac253a.zip

    Plug in USB cable type A to PC and micro USB to PAMB CONTROLLER Board.

    When plugged in, the LED lights (D1~D5) on the PAMB CONTROLLER Board will sequentially light up from D1 to D5, and then go from D1 to D5 off, and repeat this process. During this repeating cycle of illumination, a COM PORT device will appear in the device manager.

    The LED lights will turn off completely after flashing on and off repeatedly a certain number of times. At this point, the COM PORT device in the device manager disappears, and a "Tiva Device Firmware Update" with a yellow exclamation mark appears.

    While the COM PORT device is still available, the GUI can establish a connection and recognize the entire device.
