I am attempting to use the DCA1000EVM for real-time data collection with an IWR6843ISK-ODS. I am using a laptop with Ubuntu 20.04 so I can use ROS Noetic for a different part of the project. When connecting the DCA1000EVM to the laptop by USB for configuring, there is no /dev/tty[...] assigned. In my dmesg output, I can see that an FTDI device was connected and refers to it as AR-DevPack-EVM. But there is no connection point assigned.

I thought this might be due to a driver issue. As such, I have tried installing ftdi_sio, ftd2xxx, mmWaveSDK, XDS EMUpack, and XDS Support Utilities. But my laptop is still not assigning the DCA1000EVM a /dev/ttyxxx.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you

Hello,

We heavily recommend using the DCA1000 with a Windows PC as that is what all the software written for it was written for. Otherwise you will need to do manual packet sniffing with Wireshark which we at TI will not provide more support on than what can be found on the datasheet.

On windows we recommend either the DCA1000 ADC Capture Tool as found in the Radar Toolbox, or mmWaveStudio which is a separate installation for more complex data collection. Note that raw data means unfiltered, unprocessed real/complex data dumped from the ADC buffer.

Thank you for the reply. I am already able to use a Windows PC to collect radar data. However, this requires the use of two separate computers since I need to use ROS Noetic which is incompatible with Windows. Since I am collecting data on both the Windows and Linux PCs, this unfortunately means the time stamps are not synchronized and adds noise to the data in post processing.

I am confused by the mention of Wireshark. Isn't that for monitoring the ethernet connection? My question is regarding the USB connection used for sending configurations to the DCA1000. Or I am mistaken about needing the USB connection?

Hello,

You need two USB connections and an Ethernet connection in order to do raw data capture with the DCA1000 + Radar sensor. To get some what familiar with the process, please check out the DCA1000 User Guide found on the Radar Toolbox in the TI Developer Zone.

Per the discussion on this thread, other users were able to use the DCA1000 EVM with linux, using the CLI tool.

As asked in my original post, how do I get Ubuntu to access the USB connection to the DCA1000EVM?

There is the https://github.com/PreSenseRadar/OpenRadar page that is referred in that thread you linked but we have no experience with it. I am sure it is possible to have it work with Linux as proven with several google searches, but this is with tools/code that were not written by us.
