I have used the default MIMO lua script available in the installation folder of mmwave studio GUI to configure the radar. The bandwidth shown on the GUI after running "Cascade_Configuration_MIMO.lua" is 3159.44 MHz which gives us range resolution of about 4.7 cm.

MMWCAS-RF-EVM supports long range detection - Imaging Radar Using Cascaded mmWave Sensor Reference Design (Rev. A).

Can you please recheck the bandwidth and range resolution using Programming Chirp Parameters in TI Radar Devices (Rev. A)?

Is it possible to share your usecase? For very short range detections, you can take a look at xWRL1432/ IWRL6432 - Gesture Recognition.

The range resolution in my previous response was actually based on the information from Programming Chirp Parameters in TI Radar Devices (Rev. A) using equation 3 which is Range_res = c/(2*B) giving us 4.7 cm.

The numbers in the table you shared shows the maximum range. I have not found any minimum range limitation in user guides. No matter, the radar is showing poor range detection at distances longer than 1 m.

We do not have specific use case for now and I am just trying to do range measurements making sure that the radar is doing the range measurement correctly.

What is the object that you are trying to detect?

I am assuming that you are using AWR2243 4 chip cascade EVM. Can you please confirm if you are using mmWave Studio 3.0.0.14 and what is the path of the firmware that you are loading? Is it from mmWave Studio or from mmwave_dfp_02_02_04_00?

The object is a 10cm*10cm aluminum box.

I am using AWR2243 4 chip cascade EVM and the version of the mmWave Studio is 02.01.01.00 as this was the latest one, I found on TI website. Is there a newer version?

The path of the firmware is from mmwave_dfp_02_02_04_00.

Thanks. Switching to mmWave Studio 3.0.0.14 resolved the issue and I can see now a single peak in the FFT plot around the distance I expect. 

For more accurate range measurement, does the post-processing inside the GUI needs calibration or is the calibration required for the post-processing done with MATLAB?
