TMP423: TMP 42x: Is there any downside to the extended temperature range?

It appears that the extended temperature range just makes use of more of the available 8 bits and actually reports a range of 256 degrees. I cannot find anywhere in the datasheet where it suggests that the accuracy or anything changes. Is there any downside to the extended temperature range? Why would anyone not used the extended temperature range if not?

Hello Nino,

Yes, extended mode does provide better accuracy as it provides more bits in the temperature results. One side effect of extended mode is the additional complications to convert bits into a temperature result. How to Read and Interpret Digital Temperature Sensor Output Data (Rev. A)

Hi Meredith McKean ,

I'm afraid I don't follow how it is complicated? The extended range reports a normal unsigned 8 bit number with no scaling at all. All I simply have to do is add that to a signed -64 constant and I'm done. Or is this just considered complicated because if I am storing in a uint8 and trying to subtract 64 before first casting to a int16, it will cause an issue? I guess I'm answering my own question: just need more bits to store the information in the true °C engineering units (which can be negative) I guess.

Is there any other downside to the extended mode?
