Is the TMP006, Can be used for Field of view  of 10 deg?

  • Eli,

The Applications Engineer supporting the TMP006 will be back Jan.3, sorry for the delay. We are currently looking into this.

  • Hello Eli,

Considering that the TMP006 has a field of view of nearly 150°, 10° is a drastic reduction. The field of view can be limited to this degree with the right window, but the effective SNR would be hugely reduced since so much of the incoming signal would be blocked. It might be possible to compensate for this with some optical gain provided by a lens.

Can you tell me more about your application in order for me to determine its feasibility?

    Best regards,

  • Need to measure the average temperature of the objects at the field of view of 10deg. Pls see a datasheet of the sensor MLX90614ESF-BCF by Melexis, is answer customer  demands.

  • Hello Eli,

The Melexis device costs $16 at 1ku volume, so it is not comparable to the TMP006 which was designed to be a low-cost sensor primarily used in consumer electronics.

Also, you did not tell me anything about the application. What is the customer trying to measure, and what is the ambient environment like? Why is such a narrow FOV required?

    Best regards,

    Ian Williams

  • Hello Ian,

use it for cloud detection, wall temperature etc.

looking at object which are few meters away.

  • Hi,

    Any feedback?

For other customer do you have application note ,for using TMP006 for smoke detector

  • Hi Eli,

Earlier I requested specific application information which you did not provide. Are you able to provide this information? The TMP006 often requires calibration and some type of window/lens for a particular application, there is no "one size fits all" set of guidance I can give you. Also, there is not an application note for smoke detection.

    Best regards,

    Ian Williams

  • Hi,

They used it for use it for cloud detection, wall temperature etc .look at object which are few meters away.

    B.regards

    Eli

  • Hi Eli,

This is the same information as before.

A cloud detection application is not feasible. A sensor with much higher sensitivity and accuracy than the TMP006 is required for such an application.

A wall temperature application is very straightforward, since a wall is a large planar surface and it will therefore encompass a large portion of the TMP006's field of view. What particular assistance is needed with this application?

    Best regards,

    Ian Williams

  • Hi, Ian.

I know this post is a year old, but maybe you'll see it. :)

If I wanted to measure only a spot, say 2-5 cm wide what FOV would I use to be about 30-40cm away?

And would the SNR be manageable at that point?

In other words, if I got close enough, would this IR sensor be accurate +/- 1C?

    TIA,  Bill.

  • Hello Bill,

Lens is the only option when you are targeting 30-40cm distances from an object that's 2-5cm wide. SNR depends upon how good of an optics setup you can achieve. When you mentioned "close enough" can ypu please give me a range? For example if you are ~2cm away getting accuracies of 1C for a 2-5cm object will not be a problem.

Please refer to the following posts and the attachment 3010.Lens_Materials.pdffor more information on lens recommendations:

http://www.edmundoptics.com/ is also a good resource for such applications.

    I hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Abhi

  • Abhi,

Thanks for the response.  Sorry, I got pulled to another project for a minute.

Basically, I can't possibly get any closer than 15cm and 30cm is more like it.

From what I've gathered, although I'd love to use the TMP006, unless someone can pull a rabbit out of a hat, it's not happening.

  • Hi Abhi,

I have a customer who wants to know where the data in the document 3010.Lens_Materials.pdf comes from. They are especially interested in the optimal material thickness for polyethlyene. Can we provide this data?

    Thanks and regards,

    Silviu
