TMP007: Choosing Calibration Temperatures

I am working on a medical device that will use TI's TMP007 to measure blood temperature.  The sensor itself will be at room temperature when the device is turned on, but will gradually warm up to the temperature of the blood.  So the TMP007 "object temperature" will vary from 35°C - 40°C, but the "die temperature" can vary between 20°C - 40°C.  Within this range, I need an accuracy of ±1°C.

I am currently trying to calibrate the TMP007 using the TMP007EasyCal software.  I can vary the "object temperature" using heated water and log the reference temperature, TMP007 die temperature, TMP007 object voltage every second.  However, I'm not sure what combinations of die and object temperatures to use to obtain the best coefficients.  What should I choose?  Also, how much data should I record at each point?

  • Hi Adam,

    The EasyCal software should be fine to log throughout the temperature cycling of your system. You can also log a few points at pre-determined set points, but you will have to stitch the files together yourself.

    At a minimum, you should exercise all combinations of the extreme temperatures. Meaning, 20C viewing 35C and 40C; 40C viewing 35C and 40C. In order to get a reasonable calibration of B coefficients, you'll also need a third die temperature in the middle of the range.

    I tried gathering the data you suggested for two TMP007 sensors, but the resulting calibration was not within specification at all.  I have attached my CSV files for the two sensors, as well as a screenshot of the results from TMP007EasyCal for "Sensor B".  The results for Sensor A were similar.

    Is what I did wrong apparent?  How does my data compare to what users typically capture?  Should I be logging data over longer periods of time?

  • The issue is that you zeroed the coefficients. The EasyCal program only selects S0 and B# coefficients. It will update the chart as new S0 and B# coefficients are entered at the right. However, the Analysis tab will not react to changes to the other coefficients. The Analysis tab always uses default TMP007 values for the A, C and TC coefficients.

    I can replicate your results by clicking the "Run Calibration" button in the EasyCal software.  My results came from clicking the "Run Calibration Sweep-based" button.  Can you explain more fully the difference between the two?

    P.S.  The results of the calibration (±8°C) are not good enough for my application, but I'm pretty sure that's because I took data too hastily before temperature had stabilized.  I'm re-running my tests to gather new data with tighter temperature controls, and if that works, I'll accept your post as the answer to this thread.

  • Run Calibration uses polynominal fit to solve for the coefficients. This is the preferred method. Run Calibration Sweep Based iterates through possible coefficient values (limited by the TMP007 Math Engine's registers) and chooses the lowest error. This algorithm is not as effective, and is only intended to be used when the normal calibration yields coefficients that don't fit in the TMP007 registers.

  • The sheet shows the object temperature math applied to your data set. You can manually change all coefficients here; this includes the transient correction coefficients TC0 and TC1 which are not configured by EasyCalEVM.

    I wouldn't expect batch calibration to successfully reduce device-to-device variation. There is typically one device in five which needs different coefficients than the rest. We've discussed internally the possibility of a binning approach where devices that look like x get x coefficients, and devices that look like y get y coefficients. We haven't had a customer attempt to implement such an approach.
