TMP116: When are TMP116 resister data changed by GUI?

Hello guys,

One of our customers is evaluating TMP116 using TMP116 EVM and GUI software developed by TI.

On the GUI. they found tmp116 started to mesure temperature with continuous conversion mode when the GUI was started up. They changed the conversion mode to one shot on the GUI because they wanted to reduce the device self-heating for higher measument accuracy. But they found the conversion mode could not be changed by the mode pull-down menu selecting only since the consumption current was not reduce. After that, they checked the check box of Demo Mode located of right side of top in the GUI. Then the device consumption current was released.

My question are the follows.

1. When are TMP116 register data changed? Is it when Demo Mode check-box is checkd (Activated)?

2. Is TMP116 conversion mode not changed by pull-down menu selection only?

Hi Kazuya,

Register data is changed immediately when you change settings in the interface. Register data is read according to Polling Rate setting on EVM Setup tab.

Demo mode disables access to the USB device. Demo mode is used when the hardware is not present.

Hi Kazuya,

1. Yes, self-heating can induce temperature errors. There is some discussion of TMP116 Self-heating in the following app note. www.ti.com/.../snoa986.pdf

2. Demo Mode disables access to the USB hardware. Plotting is not disabled. The GUI behavior continues despite Demo Mode, but it won't be able to read or write actual data. The data reported during Demo Mode will be incorrect because it is not real.

3. Continuous is the default mode in the device. Continuous will be set when the power is cycled or when Software Reset is performed.

Which situation should Demo Mode be set to active (check-box is checked) in?

Is it for self heating minimizing?

Hi Kazuya,

No, Demo Mode is not for self heating. Demo Mode allows you to view the software when the hardware is not present.
