OPT3101: use of OPT3101 for water level detection

Part Number: OPT3101

Hi Friend,

Can we use OPT3101 ToF sensor for detecting water level in the tank?

Will targeted waves reflect back from water or their energy get absorbed?

What about the change in reflected angle  of the reflected wave due to ripples? will they cause any problem in detection?

If so, can you please share some results or design inputs which we can follow to start with.

Thanks and Best Regards,

  • Hi Vikas,

Water detection is tricky for any optical technology given that light will pass through the water. OPT3101 relies on reflected light and the time it takes for the light to bounce the target and return back. So it may not work properly with water.

It is possible that some amount of light will reflect back, but others will go through the water and bounce from the bottom of the tank. All the different lights (with different delays) will affect the overall measurement. You would have to test it and see if this meets your requirement.

    Thanks
