MMWAVE-STUDIO: Initialization issues with AWR1642 raw data capture using mmwave-devpack and tsw1400

This time, after hitting the Connect button on mmWave-Studio to connect to the RS-232 port, I load the firmware using the two "Load" buttons. Then I click on the "SPI Connect" button in order to connect to the SPI port. Just like the earlier issue, nothing happens here.

I don't understand the problem this time. My AWR1642 is correctly set to development mode by shorting SOP0 and SOP1, the TSW1400, AWR1642 and MMWAVE-DEVPACK are connected to my Windows virtual machine.

My AWR1642 has been flashed with mmWave Demo software. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi,

Were you able to use this setup before with your Windows virtual machine?

Are you using Windows 7 or 10?

We have not performed extensive testing with virtual machines.

Would it be possible to use a Windows 7 PC instead?

Hi Cesar,

Yes, I have been able to do pretty much everything until now using the Windows virtual machine. It is a Windows 7 PC.

So, you were already been able to use the same setup with the emulator? What is different this time?

Is it possible to use a standalone win 7 PC just to double check that this is not the issue.

Nothing is different this time, but I will see if I can get my hands on a Windows 7 PC.

Hi Cesar,

I checked the issue on a native Windows 10 installation (for the lack of a Windows 7 PC). Again, I was able to perform flashing on the AWR1642 and firmware update of the TSW1400EVM. I was able to install all the device drivers correctly to see the right number and type of ports in my device manager.

Even after all of this, I was not able to connect to the SPI port in mmWave Studio. The GUI just hangs up when I click the "SPI Connect" button.

Are there any logs that I can send to you to find out the cause of this issue?

Hi,

Based on the description, it seems that the SPI physical connection is not working.

Can you please check the following

1) In mmWave Studio, on the right side you should see if the AWR1642 device is ES1.0 or ES2.0

2) If it is ES 2.0, you need to check if the AWR1642 board you are using is RevA or RevB. Rev B boards have switch to mux the CAN and SPI lines. Maybe this switch is in CAN position

3) Check that you are using the correct firmware in the rfeval_firmware folder

Hi Cesar,

Thanks for your reply. My board is a Rev. A and mmWave Studio shows that the device is ES1.0 (as shown in the screenshot below). I flashed the ES1.0 from this path:

"C:\ti\mmwave_studio_01_00_00_00\rf_eval_firmware\radarss\xwr16xx_radarss_rprc_ES1.0.bin" for Radar sub-system, and from

"C:\ti\mmwave_studio_01_00_00_00\rf_eval_firmware\masterss\xwr16xx_masterss_rprc_ES1.0.bin" for Master sub-system.

Then I press the Connect SPI button and I face the same issue.

Hello Raashid,

This sounds like a firmware issue. Since you have an ES1.0 device, can you try to download the DFP and load the firmware from the following folder:

C:\ti\mmwave_dfp_01_00_00_01\rf_eval\rf_eval_firmware

If it works we will know it is a firmware issue and not a hardware issue.

I was able to connect to SPI by following these steps:

1- remove all jumpers in EMV TI IWR16542

2- Change the jumpers JP1 to JP4 in the DEVPACK to

Hello Raashid,

I just noticed you said that you have the device flashed with the mmWave Demo software. The flash should be erased before attempting to use mmWave Studio.

Hi Adrian,

I don't know why, but I did not see your responses earlier. Let me try all of your suggestions and get back to you.
A few questions though:
1. When you say you removed all the jumpers from IWR1642, do you mean that none of the SOP 0, 1, 2 are shorted?
2. Can you please clarify what you meant by "Change the jumpers in DEVPACK to"?
3. I will erase the flash, but I was following the instructions in this video by Francois Charlot : training.ti.com/mmwave-sensor-raw-data-capture-using-tsw1400-board
