I have been attempting to run the data capture demo script that is included in mmWave studio. This threw up a few errors yesterday (That I didn't record) and then worked for two runs of the script with seemingly no alteration from the runs that gave errors..

Returning today the same errors appeared and then disappeared eventually. However, an error now appears that says no data has been captured, this is true as the dump file specified in the sensor config tab has a size of 0Kb when i checked it. The FPGA_ERR_LED is also lit at this point until a board reset is issued from the connections tab.

I have attached the logs for this run and also screenshots of the output window that may be easier to read.

After this I attempted to perform the data capture manually. The process followed through fine until the set up DCA1000 step. In this step initially no FPGA version appear, when the connect,reset and configure button is hit there is also no FPGA version at first. When disconnected is then pressed and the connect,reset and configure button is hit again the FPGA version then updates. However, the arm DCA1000 button is still greyed out. Upon pressing trigger frame the same LED lights up and again no data is collected.

I have checked that there is a local area network present with the correct IP address. Also, in the process of getting rid of the initial errors the FPGA reset button was pressed on the DCA1000 board if this is important.

Any help will be appreciated.

    I looked at the log file that you uploaded in your initial post. I have a couple of questions to get started. Did you attempt to use the capture demo script on your device in the first set of commands that are captured in the log file? There is an error that is raised when you call the SPI Connect command in the Connection Tab. At this point, all subsequent command calls are rendered moot.

    Here is something else to keep in mind. The capture demo script is only designed to be used on a device coming out of reset after being powered on. So TI cannot guarantee valid results if you attempt to run the script repeatedly during the same session in which the device is powered on. The purpose of this script is to provide a starting point so that a user can build their own implementation.

  • Hi Kyle, I have performed another few tests today and still couldn't get the radar to work. Please allow me to give a detailed breakdown of the steps I performed.
  • The first run was performed as follows.

    1. The laptop was booted up.

    2.Connections to the AWR1243BOOST andd DCA1000 were set up as per the quick start guide with the power outlet for the boards turned off.

    3.The boards were powered on. At this point the following LEDs on the boards were lit. The Green 5V LED and Green FPGA_done LED on the DCA100. The Red NERR_OUT , Red 5V LED ,and Yellow NRST LED on the AWR1243BOOST.

    4.Verified that the correct IP address is put in for the LAN connection.

    5.mmWave Studio is opened.. Immediately see that there is 1 device detected and FTDI connectivity is green.

    6. Set(1) is pressed in the reset control section. The Red NERR_OUT LED on the AWR1243 briefly turn off and then back on.

    7.XDS110 Class Application/User UART COM port is selected from the drop down menu (In my case COM4). The default Baud rate of 921600 is selected.

    8.Connect(2) is pressed. RS232 Connectivity is now green. Device Status shows XWR1243/ASIL-B/SOP:2/ES:2 and Die Id Lot:6000001\Wafer:1\DevX:67\DevY:84 is shown.

    9. C:\mmwave_studio_01_00_00_00\mmWaveStudio\Scripts\DataCaptureDemo_xWR.lua is selected from the browse menu.

    10. Hit run.

    11.Firmware loading appears to go well.

    12. Error message appears. no further events occur in the log and script doesn't seem to be ending.

    13.Stop Button is pressed.

    14. I then hit the reset button in the connection tab which left RS232 connected.

    15. I then pressed disconnect on the RS232 operations .

    16. boards powered off and mmWave Studio closed.

  • The second run was an attempt to capture data manually and was performed as follows.

    1. The boards were powered on. The same LEDs were illuminated.

    2. Steps 6-8 from the previous run were followed and achieved the same outcome.

    3.C:\ti\mmwave_studio_01_00_00_00\rf_eval_firmware\radarss\xwr12xx_xwr14xx_radarss_ES2.0.bin is selected in the BSS FW area.

    4.C:\ti\mmwave_studio_01_00_00_00\rf_eval_firmware\masterss\xwr12xx_xwr14xx_masterss_ES2.0.bin is selected in the MSS FW area.

    5.Load (3) is pressed. BSS firmware version changes to 2.0.0.15 (11/01/18)

    6.Load (4) is pressed. MSS firmware version changes to 1.10.0.23 (08/01/18)

    7. SPI Connect (5) is pressed. Error message appears. Status:Failed,Error Type RESP TIMEOUT.

    8.Attempt to connect SPI again, same error appears.

    9.Assume that further commands will be useless I hit the reset button in the connections tab and close mmWave studio.

  • I then noticed that the Red NERR LED on the AWR1243 board is out. A third run was then performed to try and capture data manually. This run was carried out as below.

    1.mmWave studio is opened.

    2.Steps 2-6 of the previous run were carried out with the same results.

    3.SPI Connect is pressed and is successful. SPI connection now shows green.

    4.I then proceed to the static config tab. In future steps all settings were left as the default ones when mmWave studio opens unless otherwise stated and no errors appeared unless otherwise stated.

    5.16 bits is selected in the ADC config as this is what the DCA1000 switch is set to.

    6.Hit set on ADC config.

    20.Hit set up DCA1000. The initial screen seen doesn't match that seen in fig9.3 of the mmWave Studio user guide. I have attached a picture of the initial screen. note that the dump file is left as the default.

    21. Hit Connect,Reset and Configure on the set up DCA1000 window. The screen now matches (Except for a different FPGA version 2,7) that shown in the user guide. I don't close this window.

    22.Swap back to sensor config tab.

    23.Hit DCA1000 ARM.

    24.Wait.

    25.Hit Trigger Frame. All buttons in the Capture and Post Processing section are now greyed out and the Red FPGA_ERR LED lights on the DCA1000 board. The adc_data.bin file is empty.

    26.Hit reset in the connections tab.

    27.Power off boards.

    28. Power on boards (Red NERR LED is lit on the AWR1243 Now again, unclear whether this appeared before the power was cycled.).

  • It seems to me that I have two problems, firstly is the SPI connection seeming to fail in the first two cases, any ideas why this could happen? I am assuming it's related to the red NERR LED as the AWR1243BOOST user guide states that this is due to a hardware error, how would you go about fixing this?

    However, even when SPI connection is established the frame doesn't seem to trigger properly/ data is not sent to the laptop. Any ideas as to what could cause this?

  • Also, I had set port 4098 (The ADC data port in the DCA1000 user guide) to be allowed by windows firewall so that shouldn't be causing an issue I don't think.

  • I have just used a fresh laptop to follow the DCA1000 user guide exactly and the same error as in my initial run 1 appeared. I also replicated my third run issue using the data capture demo as well (no data stored in the dump file). Any ideas as to what the issue/issues are?

    Please ensure that you have jumpers across SOP0 and SOP1. Both jumpers are needed when using the DCA1000 in mmWave Studio.

    Next, in SW2, the switches should be in the following positions:

    1: LVDS_CAPT
    2: ETH_STREAM
    3: 1243_MODE
    4: RAW_MODE
    5: SW_CONFIG
    6: USER_SW1
    7: USER_SW2
    8: USER_SW3

    In SW1, the position of these three switches is determined by the format of your ADC data that you specify in mmWave Studio. So for 16-bit data, the switches should be in the following positions:

    1: 12BIT_OFF
    2: 14BIT_OFF
    3: 16BIT_ON

  • I have confirmed that all of the switches are in the configuration you showed and that SOP1 and SOP0 jumpers are being used. Unfortunately the same problem of having no data in the dump file persists.

  • Also, on subsequent attempts to run the script and capture data manually I am also now getting error messages saying that the Ethernet cable is disconnected. The cable is plugged in and the windows network and sharing center shows a LAN connection though.

    Also,  I'm now hitting an error connecting the COM port in the  RS232 connections part. I have attached the log file for this. Please, is this likely to be caused by a  hardware problem with either board?

  • I have ensured that mmWave studio is set to be let through windows firewall. Along with this I have explicitly allowed ports 4096 (outbound from PC) and 4098 (inbound to PC) through the firewall (I believe these are the correct ports to allow?). Pinging the IP address of the DCA1000 (192.168.33.180) gives no return (Is it meant to?) but the Ethernet cable is connected and I am able to configure the IP address in the local area network properties screen.

    I am still getting the same error as my one a couple of messages ago when attempting to connect the COM port (I have verified in the device manager screen that I am attempting to connect the right COM port).

    TI recomend that the xWR EVM is powered up with only SOP0 jumper (P4) placed and then the SOP1 jumper (P2) is placed followed by a toggle of nRST using SW2 onboard switch.
    Starting AWR1243 with both jumpers I haven't been able to set SPI conection. Following this TI recomendation solve the problem for me.
    So
    1. place only SOP0 jumper and power up AWR;
    2. place SOP1 jumper and reset AWR using SW2 onboard switch or button Set (1) in mmWavestudio - RadarAPI - Board Control section;
    3. perform other steps according to DCA1000_Quick_Start_Guide.

    We've run mmWavestudio (Win7 x64) + DCA1000 (switches positions as Kyle said) + AWR1243 and there were no any problem with Ethernet connection. But today's try to run mmWavestudio (Win10 x64) failed (Ethernet cable is disconnected). Probably win10 is the issue ...? Please let me know if you are using win10.
