IWR1642BOOST: Which silicon version is this ?

Part Number: IWR1642BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1642, MMWAVE-SDK

Hi, I am getting confused with the explanation of finding ES1.0 and ES2.0. My boards don’t have any ES2.0 label which I have recently purchased. These boards are not working on vital sign demo on any of the automotive toolboxes. I have included the picture of silicon of my board. Can anybody tell me which version is this and which SDK and toolbox would perfectly for these boards?

  • Hi Laxmi,

    The device markings are normally described in the device errata doc.  For IWR1642 the "502AC" marking means that it is an ES2.0 part.

    The latest mmWave-SDK which supports this device and ES version and includes the mmWave SDK demo is mmWave-SDK 2.1.0.4.  (The previous mmWave-SDK version 2.0.0.4 also supported IWR1642 ES2.0.)

    However, you would need to check the release notes for a particular Automotive Toolbox lab to know which mmWave SDK it is compatible with.  For example, the release notes for Driver Vital Signs lab v2.0.0 which is present in Automotive Toolbox v2.4.4 requires mmWave SDK 2.0.0.4.

  • Thanks John and Vaibhav for making a comment but I find a contradiction in answers. I would again request both of you, Please reconfirm.

    I have some finds which I would like to share. I have four board of same ic name and only one out of those 4 is working with SDK2.0.0.4 and AT 2.4.3 which supports ES2.0 device and as per nomenclature described in Figure 9-1 it should be ES 1.0.

    If I consider A in "502AC" to infer it is ES2.0 then what is the meaning of remaining characters 5,0,2, and C.

    Now, If it is really ES 2.0 then why other three boards are not working with AT 2.4.3. I have studied it thoroughly, please refer this link and kindly do answer that thread too.

  • Hi Laxmi,

    Sorry for the confusion. There was a miss-communication in the information Vaibhav posted which I removed to avoid future confusion. The datasheet only contains the orderable part number information, not information on the device markings. The device errata doc normally describes device markings. Since IWR1642 ES2.0 was the final version released for production and is the only orderable version, the information on ES1.0 vs. ES2.0 was not listed in the current IWR1642 device errata doc.

    To clarify, here are the device markings for IWR1642.
    "502" = ES1.0
    "502AC" = ES2.0

    Therefore, the picture you sent is an ES2.0 device. If all four of the boards you received have "502AC" then they are all ES2.0 devices. Your remaining questions/issues will be addressed on the other thread (e2e.ti.com/.../762473 ).

    Regards,
    John
  • Thanks for being quck. Now, I believe I have ES 2.0. Well Explained. Thanks again.
