LDC1101EVM: Range and Resolution

Part Number: LDC1101EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LDC1101, LDC1041, OPT3101

Hello

In a factory automation application we are trying to measure a varying distance between a moving object and a fixed heavy metal (steel) plate. We must attach the sensor to the moving object. The distance to be measured varies between 0 and 25mm. Offset up to 50mm is allowed, which means we can measure distance between 50 and 75mm. Measurement resolution is required to be 0.1mm or better and sampling frequency is required to be 10KHz or higher.

After some research within TI literature we think our options are;

·       OPT31010-EVM (Laser & Time Of Flight)

·       TDC7201-EVM (Laser & Time Of Flight)

·       PGA-450-EVM (Ultrasonic)

·       PGA-460-EVM (Ultrasonic)

·       LDC1101 EVM (Inductive)

·       LDC1041 EVM (Inductive)

The radar sensors have been excluded because of their low resolution.

Questions are;

1.      Are we correct in short listing these EVMs?

2.      Do you have more options offered by TI?

3.      Can these 6 EVMs achieve what we want or should we exclude any of them

4.      If any of the above is good enough do we just need to purchase the EVM for testing or do we need to purchase something else beside e EVM (eg different coil for the Inductive solution)

Regards

Sam

  • Hello Sam,

    I don't have information about laser distance measurement, but I can answer your questions about the PGA and LDC devices. I'll loop in another engineer who can answer questions about the OPT3101.

    The PGA devices can be eliminated as they won't meet your 0.1mm resolution requirement.

    Inductive sensing can meet the requirements you mentioned, depending on your target. I discussed a lot of the limitations and design parameters of inductive sensing in the other thread you posted. I do recommend purchasing the coil board I mentioned in my other response. I also recommend using the LDC161x for this application, which is our highest resolution device. The LDC1041 is NRND (not recommended for new designs), so I definitely do not recommend experimenting with this device.

    Best Regards,

  • Hi Sam,

    We already have a thread going here re OPT3101 and talked about how it will not hit the 0.1mm requirement. Please post in that thread

    or create a new post if you have any questions related to OPT3101 that I can follow up on.

    Best,
