OPT3101: Distance Measurement

Part Number: OPT3101
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC7201

Hello

In a factory automation application we are trying to measure a varying distance between a moving object and a fixed heavy metal (steel) plate. We must attach the sensor to the moving object. The distance to be measured varies between 0 and 25mm. Are we able to use your OPT3101 evaluation module to realize this measurement? 4Ksps is just good enough for us.

If not, does TI have other sensing system that can help us?

Regards

Sam

  • Hi Sam,

What is the minimum distance you need and how much resolution? Are you able to set 0mm as a fixed offset some millimeters in front of the emitter and receiver? Setting 0mm right at the optics might be a bit challenging due to triangulation error.

Have you also seen our system estimator tool online? This can help in simulation range and performance as well.

    Best,

    Alex
  • Hi Alex,

    Thanks for responding.

Resolution we need is 0.1mm or better. Min distance can change from 0 to 50mm we have the freedom to change the location of the sensor.

I think before we delve into triangulation and system estimator it might be a good idea to address whether we can realize 0.1mm resolution and 25mm measurement range.

    Regards

    Sam

  • Hi Sam,

We cannot do 0.1mm resolution. The ADC limits the device to 0.22mm resolution, but error and noise make the practical resolution 1-2mm best case.

  • Hi Alex

    Many thanks. Very clear answer.

Does the same limitations (in terms of resolution) apply to TDC7201-EVM?

If so....does TI has any solution for us that would allow us to measure distance with a resolution of 0.1mm and measuring range of 25mm, where we have the flexibility to offset that range by up to 50mm?

    Regards

    Sam

  • Hi Sam,

The TDC7201 should not have the same limitation. This is a direct time of flight sensor (OPT3101 is indirect because it measures phase shift rather than directly the time for light to travel there and back) so the technology is a bit different. There will be some limitation but this will be determined by the speed of the TDC chip. I don't directly support TDC so I would suggest creating a new post for the TDC7201-EVM to get someone who can help there.

    Best,

    Alex
