IWR6843: Minimum distance from sensor for the range resolution

Hi,

I understand that range resolution is the minimum distance between two objects to be detected separately.

However, I wanted to know at what distance from the sensor is range resolution valid?

I mean can I put two objects 3.75 cm apart at any distance e.g. 0.5 or 1 meter distance from sensor and they will still be detected as different or is there is something more to it?

Hi Vinitk99,

The minimum distance for detection is about 3 cm, keep in mind that this is a physical limitation that cannot be changed.

I want to clarify my understanding of the answer. You mean to say that two objects can be kept 3.75 cms (obtained by range resolution formula for 4 GHz bandwidth) apart at the distance of 3 cm from mmWave sensor to be distinguished as separate objects.

Is that what you are saying? If yes can you please explain how you got 3 cm as minimum distance?

Hi Vinit,

You are correct, this is due to the max 4GHz bandwidth of the device. If you are curious about more aspects of chirp parameters, I'd recommend looking at the mmWave Sensing Estimator.

Hi Akash,

can you clarify how min. detectable range is connected to bandwidth? Min. range should be equal to range resolution which is 3.75 cm in this case as pointed out by OP.
