MMWAVE-STUDIO: MMWAVE-STUDIO crashes randomly

Hi, 

I am using a IWR1642 with a DCA1000 board to collect RAW data from the device with mmwave-studio. But mmwave-studio keeps crashing randomly. I asked the same question here https://e2e.ti.com/support/sensors/f/1023/t/813141#pi320995=1 and was told to increase the packet delay for the DCA1000. It worked for a day but the issue started up again. I used wireshark to check the network traffic and it looks like the issue is from mmwave-studio. I increased the delay from 25 to 50, 75, 100, 125, ... none of it fixed the problem. If you check the video I attached, you will see that the DCA1000 board was still sending the frames after mmwave-studio crashed and also that my NIC was still receiving the data after the crash. I believe there is some issue with mmwave-studio that is causing this issue.

  • I forgot to mention this before,  mmwave-studio crashed a few times when I was running the setup script and in some cases when I wasn't doing anything. Although most of the crashes occurred during data collection.

  • Yes. Were you able to replicate the crashes? If not can you send me the exact setup you are using? I can try using the same setup and see if it helps.

    I do not see an issue with a single run of the script with your config.  However, you should always restart mmWave studio and power cycle the boards between every run of a script.

    I power cycle both the board and the desktop before running the script. But eventually the script crashes before finishing all 100 samples. Do you mind repeating the rest a few times and conforming that it does not crash? Also, can you give me the full hardware and software setup you used to test. I can just buy the same setup and try using that.

  • If you are taking about line 276, I was checking the file sizes to make sure there weren't any dropped packets. But even if I remove that check the tool still crashes.

    Though I have seen this question question multiple times from multiple users, TI support seems of less helpful. 

    Also, in other issues responses I saw notes that next release of mmWave studio will happen in August. But no information so far.

    It's really getting tired of unresolved issues pertaining to random crashes of mmWave Studio, while we are highly dependent of DCA1000 data capture board for gathering raw data.

    I really appreciate TI Support Forums answers, but this one issue is been there for very long time. I hope someone from TI will really look into this issue soon.

    Try reducing the number of chirps and frames.  Right now you are transmitting 200 frames and repeating 230 times.  Here is the format for frameconfig:

  • I tried it and the software still keeps crashing randomly. Also, as I mentioned before, I need the config I have for my work. And my config is within the device specifications so I don't see how that can be a problem.

    I attached a few matlab crash dumps. Most of them point to an issue with AR1xController. You mind having someone who worked on mmwave-studio take a look at it.

  • Its not a device question. The crash dumps are from matlab runtime used by mmwave-studio. The AR1xController.dll, pthreads are also used by mmwave-studio. The issue is in the mmwave-studio application, it has nothing to do with my device.
