IWR1843BOOST: best models for drones perception

Part Number: IWR1843BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1843, IWR6843, , IWR6843ISK, MMWAVEICBOOST, IWR6843AOP

Greetings,

I conduct research about drone perception and navigation under adverse conditions (night, dense rain, snow, haze, smoke).  I need to detect very small obstacles like wires of power lines within 30 meters and trees and buildings within 80 or 100 meters.(it needs to be done also under rain for example). So i need good resolution and robustness under bad weather. Relative speeds are within 100kmh. Also It is mandatory to have ROS support. The IWR/AWR radar come to a good choice for those purposes, precisely i consider IWR BOOST models 1642, 1842, 6843. What model would you recommend for my purpose?
kind regards

  • Hi,

You can start with either IWR1843 (77 Ghz) or IWR6843(60 GHz). Both have ROS driver support.

We have not experimented with wire lines at longer distances, so that may be a challenge.

    Thanks

    Yogesh

  • Thank you Yogesh. But i have several follow up questions.

    1. Did i correctly understand, that my the only options are  IWR6843ISK  and IWR1843BOOST?

    2. In the case of IWR6843 do i need to buy  MMWAVEICBOOST (In robotics examples they are used together) or i just will be able to plug in IWR6843ISK to my Linux PC via USB and start using it with ROS. Is that possible to change chirp configuration without MMWAVEICBOOST?

    3. Do i need consider IWR6843AoP? It seems like it's only for short distances.

    4. It seems like IWR1843BOOST for my application a little bit more powerful  than 6843, more memory, more antenna gain, additional interfaces,  but for some reason there is much less information and examples about it compare to IWR6843.   IWR6843 supports almost all labs, including robotics application,  but about 1843 there is no information. Should i worry about that, or IWR1843 supports  all the same that IWR6843 supports and they are fully interchangeable? Or if there is some concerns, then a good idea just to buy the newest IWR6843ISK?

    Thanks.
