MMWAVE-STUDIO: Error message during startup

Part Number: MMWAVE-STUDIO
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DCA1000EVM

Hi,

using Win10, I installed mmWStudio 3.0.0.14. During the startup (behind the splash screen), I always get a window opening with an error message:

Seems a file is crashed or missing. Has anybody got a name, an address  ( :-) )?  Where can it be found?

At the end of the day, this installation will at least execute the script, open the Radar API and connect the FTDI chips, but no device is detected and no RS and SPI connection can be done.

No visible change to the USB devices takes place.

(In contrast to a Win7 installation on another machine, where additional USB devices pop up, but there the MATLAB stuff won't run due to a 64-32 bit incompatibility, some DLL is not found and the script won't terminate so I cannot check if connections could be made there)

Thanks

  • Hi,

Please give us a few days to review your request and get back to you

    Cesar

  • Please make sure that you have MATLAB runtime 8.5.1 (32-bit) installed on your PC. You must use the 32-bit installer.

    Regards,
    Kyle

  • Dear Kyle, yes I have this exact 32-bit Matlab distributable (and nothing else from Matlab because here is Mathematica country -:) ) installed on the PC and the problem is still persistent on this installation. In the meantime (pure brute force method) we have installed the mmwStudio on everything that has a keyboard with very mixed results - none of the installations works but all fail at different points.

  • I have to admit that I started mmwStudio for the first time without the radar attached (because I did not get to this point in the user's guide) and not in administrator mode. Now I know that. If there is a way to revert completely, I will do directly. Deinstallation, deletion and re-installation does not help though.

This error msg is unique, the other four installations don't show this one but, alas, plenty of others :-)

    Yours

    Harald

  • Harald,

It also helps when you connect the radar EVM along with the DCA1000EVM to the PC and let Windows Device manager discover and install the drivers for these devices.

You may need to install an updated version of the FTDI drivers. These updated drivers can be found here: https://software-dl.ti.com/ra-processors/esd/MMWAVE-SDK/03_03_00_03/exports/ftdi_driver_2_12.zip

    Regards,
    Kyle

  • Kyle,

thanks for the answer. I had already the most up-to-date drivers installed. So the problem persists.

But I found another issue that may be the cause for this behavior: This specific computer has only USB-C connectors and generates the USB-B via an expander. I have installed a linespy (Beagle) to track the communication on the buses. Apparently the identification process does not work properly here. Since all the other installations (on machines with USB-B) have their own little problems, I cannot verify this claim directly.

One thing would be great to add in your user's guide for the mmWave Studio:

Tell the user that if one uses a MMWCAS-RF-EVkit,...

1: that there is another specific user's guide for this installation.

2:Include as well a screenshot for the USB recognition when the cascade radar is used. There are only two USB ports (Converter A and B) instead of 4+2.

These addenda would help reduce coffee consumption and by this lower the blood pressure of the project engineer.... :-)

In the GUI-screenshots of the user's guide, there are some windows and buttons allowing to choose "Single Chip" and "Cascade" located to the left of the tab head. I cannot see such buttons in my GUI (in none of the 5 installations). Should I worry?

  • Harald,

Thank you for the feedback. Typically using USB hubs can introduce issues when attempting to use mmWave Studio.

And you can use the window sliders to pan left in the main viewing window in order to see the "single Chip" and "Cascade" options that you mentioned. There should not be an issue with your installation.

    Kyle

  • Hi Kyle,

Luckily I made one of the other 5 installations work, all on machines that do not use USB-C and run Windows 10. So this issue is resolved.

Maybe I am a especially slow-brained type of engineer, but it would be extremely helpful to mention in the user's guide the fact that the window sliders have to be used to pan left to reach the static buttons (and this requires the application window to exit full screen mode).

    Thanks for the help!

    Yours

    Harald

  • Harald,

I am glad to hear that this issue has been resolved!

Thank you for your feedback regarding the viewing window in mmWave Studio.

Please create a new thread if you encounter any other issues.

    Regards,

    Kyle
