Best way to support both MSP430 and XDS100v2 license on same PC?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CCSTUDIO

Hi TI CCS Support team,

I'm wondering what is the best/recommended way to simultaneously support:

  1. Free XDS100v2 license (for ARM debugging)
  2. MSP430 code size limited license (for minor MSP430 development)

Currently I have an old CCSv4 installation I use for MSP430 and a CCSv5.1 installation I use for ARM work, but I find this setup a bit clumsy. As such the setup works, but I find it backward having a need to have two complete different CCS installations when all I basically need is to have two free licensing types installed (alternative switch between then when starting CCS). Is this possible in any way which I have just missed until now? I have tried to search TI E2E, Wikis, etc. but unfortunately can't find any such info?

In case it isn't possible today, would it be a feature you would consider adding in the (near) future, or will the way forward be to still simply have two different installation with the extra overhead in serms of diskspace, updating, etc, it takes?

Best regards and thanks in advance

  • Hi Soeren,

unfortunately, that I am aware of, two installations is the only solution.

I will certainly give the feedback however.

  • Hi Lisa,

That was a really fast reply :-) Thanks. Sorry to hear that it's isn't possible today tough. I hope you will strongly consider it going forward as it will make (at least my) life much easier only having to deal with one install...

Alternative I guess I will have to go and buy a full version. In that case I assume that it today with CCSv5.1 will be possible to support both MSP and ARM with just a single installation - Right? Any rough price indication on a full fledged CCS install?

    Best regards

  • Hi Soeren,

    a couple things here.

    - yes a full license of course would allow both

One option you do have is to switch between the two license types on one installation.  You can launch license setup in CCSv5 under Help->Code Composer Studio Licensing Info.  The manage tab has a "launch license setup" button.

As far a license pricing you can check the TI Estore, your distributor etc.  More information is here

  • Hi Lisa,

Thanks again for fast feedback. I just tried switching license in CCSv51 and I managed to switch from my XDS100v2 license to the free MSP430 license, but I can't manage to switch back regardless what I try (Previously the window below stated something about supporting XDS100 and not supporting MSP430). Any hints/Ideas of what to try?

Wrt pricing I missed the http://www.ti.com/tool/ccstudio link until now. 445$ for a node locked single user license is actually quite a lot cheater than I remembered. Maybe this is the easiest path to take. Anyway until then I hope I can get a new XDS100 license installed somehow?

    Regards and thanks in advance

  • Hi Soeren,

I am surprised that it will not let you launch the license setup again after setting the MSP430 license.  Can you confirm this?  Did you look in the manage tab?

Multiple CCS installations is no problem (many of us here have that of course).  So you can simply install into a different directory and choose the other license type.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

I can open the tab, and it shows me the following:

I think originally I could select something with XDS100 on this 2nd dialogbox? Can I kindly ask you to try this and let me know as well?

    Best regards
     Søren

  • Hi Soeren,

this is in v5?  We get internal licenses here so let me see if I can find an offline setup ..... if I can find a setup I will try to reproduce this for you.

Actually in the mean time .. each case should have generated a license file for you.  What if you use the first option and point between the two different license files?  They will be .lic.  Give that a try and keep us informed.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Yes it is CCSv5. The .lix file I got following the link was however: TMDSCCS-HWN01A-v4.0.lic (I would had assumed it to state 5.0?)

Problem of trying to import XDS .lic file is  that I didn't generate any XDS100 .lic file originally, as I :

    1) Though I had one already (as I have been using it for the last year or so)

    2) Though I could create a new later in case I couldn't find the first (when I woudl convert back)

I'm now in a situation, where I can't find the first, and I don't have the option to create it again => I can't do it.

I'm however right now trying to generate a 90 day full eval license to see if importing this will change anything...

Likewise I have tried to remove the old license following info from http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/FAQ_-_CCSv4#Q:_Why_can.27t_I_find_the_licenselocation.txt_file.3F and http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Licensing_-_CCS, but it seems to somehow stay stuck on the Free license above...

I will keep you posted when I have info on result of importing full eval license for testing

  • Importing the 90 day Full feature license seems to have done the trick - At least for now, as I can now again connect to the ARM and as well use the MSP430.

Then the 90 days are over I think I will simply progress by just getting a real license avoiding the changing... :-)

Now having a full license installed I will try to get my bigger USB560 emulator to work as well, as I guess it afterall is preferred to the free XDS100 :-)

Thanks for now - In case of facing problems with the USB560 I will open a new thread
