Using Terminal Plug-In with Stellaris Virtual COM port in CCSv5

Hi,

I'm facing problems when I want to use the Terminal plug-in in CCSv5 (5.2.1.00018).

The terminal plug-in was installed as outlined here: http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/How_to_install_the_terminal_plugin_in_CCSv5

I'm working with the Stellaris Launchpad (EK-LM4F120XL), the Stellaris virtual COM port is assigned to COM18 for this particular board.

I've conducted some testings with the bit-banging example code from STELLARISWARE. The virtual COM-port is working fine when using PuTTY for viewing the output messages.

Since I don't want to switch between two programs when debugging my code I'm usually using the CCS termini plug-in for such things.

I configured a terminal connection, started the program, but nothing happens in my terminal window.

Any idea what to look for?

Kind regards

  • Hi,

have you tried using hardware flow control?  What settings do you have in Putty?   Normally if it was just the speed that was off, you would expect the characters to be there but a bit odd in many programs.   Is Putty closed and nothing is blocking or using or holding that COM open.  Does hyperterminal work?  Is there a bit further info you can provide?  If you are using an unmodified example, which one?  We can try to reproduce things here.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

I'm testing this with an unmodified 'bitband' example project which is part of 'SW-EK-LM4F120XL-9453.exe'.

It is Lab8 from the EK-LM4F120XL Launchpad Workshop (http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/Getting_Started_with_the_Stellaris_EK-LM4F120XL_LaunchPad_Workshop?DCMP=stellaris-launchpad&HQS=stellaris-launchpadtrainingworkbook), so it should be no problem for you (and anybody else) to reproduce this.

There mustn't be flow-control enabled for the Stellaris virtual COM port; that's what's written throughout the workbook (and verified with the unit). So, here are my PuTTY settings:

    Here's the output from 'bitband':

Since my host PC is running Win7 32-bit HOME PREMIUM hyperterminal is no alternative.  Since I don't have another terminal program at hands I simply used the terminal window from my SIRF IV GPS-Tool. This terminal window shows every message in a new line, so this is what is written to the virtual COM port:

So, settings for Stellaris virtual COM port were fine, two different terminal can be used. So, why is the CCSv5 terminal plug-in not working?

    Kind regards

  • Hi,

I just thought I would update you that I also seem to be finding difficulty with the built in terminal for some reason. I am trying to dig into this.   When I have any feedback I will keep you informed.

    Best Regards,

    Lisa

  • Hi,

this has been reproducable on various pcs, however, we have not been able to find a work around so far.    Unfortunately you will have to, at least for now, use Putty or similar.   Sorry for any inconvenience.  We are investigating so hopefully this will be resolved going forward.

  • Hi has there been a solution to this yet?

I am having the same problem. Im running Windows7 64bit. CCS  Version: 5.3.0.00090

Installed both plug-ins with no problem.

The terminal window says its connected but I get nothing.

Putty and Tera term work as expected.

    Thanks

    Tim

  • Hi Tim,

that I am aware of this is still a known issue though you are probably best to post as a new question in the stelllaris forum.

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • @gyuhag kim

Thanks for suggesting changing the baud rate. Why didn't I think of that?
I don't know where your post went... but I changed the baud rate to 9600 and the terminal is working.
    thanks

    @Lisa
    Thanks for the reply.
