FlexNET Licensing Error (-96,491): "Server machine is down or not responding."

Hello,

Our lab has just acquired through TI's university program a CCsv5 with 100 users floating license, and I am having a hard time setting it up. I have followed all of the instructions in order to install the FlexNET server, and the service seems to be running just fine on our local server. I have also opened the 27000-27009 ports for the license manager so that other computers of our local network could connect to it.

However, whenever I try to connect to the server's license manager through Code Composer Studio 5, I would get an error message telling me that the "server machine is down or not responding" (error code -96,491). I've tried this with other computers in the lab, and the same error message always comes up. I've tried opening the same ports as the server (27000-27009) client side, it hasn't changed anything. I also tried to use the IP address of the server instead of its domain name, no luck either.

I've joined to this topic the logs that can be found on the FlexNET license manager, if it can be of any help. I'm at a loss here, did anybody have similar problems to the ones I am having ? Any tips on what I could investigate ?

Your help is greatly appreciated !

Louis

  • Hi Louis,

a few questions.  What exact version of ccs are you using.  Also, is my understanding correct on the server machine you can access a license?  Is this issue only on the remote machines?

Any details would help.  Also, if so, is on the remote machines, how are you pointing ccs to the license?  Have you double checked the firewalls/proxys/permissions?  Also that you are using 8080?

Have you tried restarting the service?

    Best Regards,
    Lisa

  • Hello Lisa,

Thank you for the swift reply !

I have used the version that was shipped to me in a DVD, which is CCSv5.3. I've also tried downloading CCSv5.4, however the result is exactly the same.

This issue occurs on more than on remote machine. In fact, it occurs with all of the remote machines, and I haven't been able to run the software successfully on any of our computers.

As for the remote machines, once in CCSv5, I went into the License management menu found under the Help menu, and added the license server's domain name (which is hosted on the EPFL's network). The port that is in use is 27000 as outlined in the FlexNet license administration web interface. The result is 27000@domainname.epfl.ch. I've also tried using the IPv4 address of the server directly instead of its domain name, but this doesn't seem to change much.

As for the firewalls, I've double checked them both client side and server side. I've even tried to see if turning the firewalls off on both computers changed anything, but it hasn't changed anything either. What do you mean by proxies ? Permissions seemed fine as well.

For some reason, the Flexnet license administration interface is not accessed through 8080, but through 8090 instead (I can only access the interface through domainname.epfl.ch:8090). Is this normal ? On the wiki it is stated that port 8080 should be the one used to access the interface.

I have restarted the service several times already.

Hope this helps. Thanks for the continued support ! Cheers,

    Louis

  • Hi Louis,

no problem, although non of us are flexnet experts and in fact we have an internal license system we use which makes it even harder.

I would try using 8080.  I would also double check the 27000 .. use 8080 there instead or make sure it is not something other than 27000.

Do you use the GUI to setup the server? Could you send screen captures?

    Best regards,

    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa,

I can't even begin to imagine how complicated it must be. I understand if FlexNet isn't your expertise either, but I hope we'll be able to figure it out somehow.

Alright, how do I configure the service to go through port 8080 and not 8090 ? Is this done in the license manager's GUI ? I'll take a look at the 27000 port and also try the 8080 port to see if it takes us anywhere, then I will come back to you with the results (tomorrow I'm afraid, I'm going to have to leave the lab soon).

What I use to setup the server is the online GUI that can be accessed through the 8090 port of our server's address. You will find attached a screenshot of said interface. When I try to launch lmgrd.exe or lmadmin.exe from the server, nothing happens.

    Best regards,
    Louis

  • Hi Louis,

try in the vedon daemon configuration ...

    Best Regards,

    Lisa

  • Hi Lisa, I've managed to get out system working somehow ! Here's what I did :

    1. I re installed the license manager to see if it could change anything (and I configured it this time to the 8080 port for accessing the GUI).

    2. I realized that we needed to open the appropriate ports (8080, the license manager port, as well as the vendor daemon's port which can be found in the vendor daemon configurations) for several of the programs contained within the FLEXnet installation. Thus the three aforementioned ports were open for the lmadmin service, as well as these programs : lmadmin.exe, lmgrd.exe, lmutil.exe, tidspssw.exe

For some reason it works like a charm now. Thanks a lot for your input !

    Best regards,
    Louis

  • Hi Louis,

Great, glad to hear things are up and running.

Thanks for the update and all the best with development.

    Best Regards,
