TIIDA-01580 (Wireless ECG, SpO2, PTT and heart rate monitor reference design for medical and consumer wearables)

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TIDA-01580, TMP117, AFE4900, CC2640R2F, TPD1E10B06, TPS61099, TPS63900, TPS63036, AFE4900EVM

Good morning,

I am currently an undergraduate student at the Democritus University of Thrace in Greece performing my dissertation thesis in the field of biomedicine. For this purpose, my colleagues and I, would like to develop a system of wearable sensors that will enable the continuous monitoring of vital biomedical parameters such as the body temperature, the blood pressure, the saturation of oxygen in blood, the hearth rhythm, as well as the electrocardiogram.

Through my navigation to your site and having previously looked into various scientific papers, I did not manage to find exactly the appropriate equipment that I will need to fulfil my thesis.  However, as I was looking into your site and your previous project , I noticed that the TIIDA-01580 (Wireless ECG, SpO2, PTT and heart rate monitor reference design for medical and consumer wearables)  is very close to the project I have undertaken in order to consider it as a model. However, as I mentioned above in the system that I want to design that will have the shape of a bracelet, I will want to monitor and take measurements for blood pressure and blood glucose monitoring. So, do you know if this happens ??
If so, how can I include the monitoring of these biomedical parameters in my system that I want to design and which parts are compatible and suitable ??

Kind Regards,

Sotiris Katsimentes

  • Hello Sotiris,

Thank you for reaching out and your interest in TI's reference designs.

Let me first explain what TIDA-01580 does: TIDA-01580 can measure ECG and PPG in synchronized manner. Using these parameters, one can calculate  heart-rate, SpO2 & Pulse Transit time (PTT). For blood pressure, blood glucose and body temperature monitoring, you need extra sensors which are not available in TIDA-01580. You can take TIDA-01580 as reference, but will have to interface all other sensors and also modify the software accordingly.

For temp sensing, you can look at TMP117.

For blood pressure and blood glucose, the sensors will decide the signal chain.

  • Thank you very much for your help and for your prompt response. However, after your answer I would like you to help me and answer some questions that were created.
    1) As for the software I will need for the system I want to build based on TIDA-01580, what is it ?? (LabView ;;) Which software does TIDA-01580 use ??

    2) regarding the sensors I will need, for blood pressure, blood glucose and body temperature monitoring, can you suggest some specific ones ??
Essentially these will be sensors that will simply be connected to the central AFE4900 device ??

    3) '' For blood pressure and blood glucose, the sensors will decide the signal chain ... '' can you explain to me what you mean because I did not understand ??

    Kind Regards,

    Sotiris Katsimentes

  • Here are answers to your questions:

    1. TIDA-01580 uses two softwares. Code composer studio for coding and LabVIEW for GUI. Please refer to the details on https://www.ti.com/tool/TIDA-01580

    2. AFE4900 can not support all the sensors. Please refer to the datasheet of AFE4900. It supports only ECG & PPG sensing.

Temperature sensing needs a temp sensor (like TMP117). Blood pressure sensing needs pressure sensors, which TI does not make. However, once you select the pressure sensor, TI can help with signal conditioning circuit for the same. Similarly for blood glucose monitoring, TI does not have sensors, but can help with signal conditioning circuit.

    3. Please refer to the following links which show block diagram for these:

    Blood pressure monitor: https://www.ti.com/solution/blood-pressure-monitor

    Blood glucose monitor: https://www.ti.com/solution/blood-glucose-monitor

I guess if you refer to all the documents in detail, you can find answers to most of your questions. TI does not have any readymade solution for what you are looking for. You will have to build your own block diagram and select components accordingly.

    Sanjay R. Pithadia

  • Thank you very much once again for your prompt response and your valuable help.
    Regarding your answers:
    1) Because I am a beginner and completely amateur and I have not been involved in the design of such a system again, neither at the hardware level nor at the software level, do you know better from where I could learn the programs regarding the software ??
    2) Since the AFE4900 can not support such measurements, do you know of any AFE that is capable of supporting all these measurements ?? The other parts based on what characteristics should I choose to be sure that they are compatible with the other parts ??

For example, the temperature sensor that you suggest to me that I will know that it is compatible with AFE, that is, I have to pay attention to something specific ?? (Is it simply connected directly to the AFE or does it need something further ??)

    3) Finally, Regarding the pressure sensor and the sensor for measuring glucose, do you know somewhere specific that I should look for, in a specific site so that I can be sure that they are compatible and can interface with AFE ??

    Kind Regards,

    Sotiris Katsimentes

  • Hello,

    1. I would recommend studying the CCS studio software (with some trainings on TI web) and looking at AFE4900 datasheet for any hardware level understanding.

    2. There is no single AFE which can support all the sensors you are looking for.

For temp sensor, we have example reference designs like: https://www.ti.com/tool/TIDA-01624 and https://www.ti.com/tool/TIPD109

    3. I guess you can search for some pressure sensors and glucose sensors on internet. Mostly you will need signal conditioning circuit + ADC for those sensors.

  • I noticed that the TIIDA-01580 (Wireless ECG, SpO2, PTT and heart rate monitor reference design for medical and consumer wearables)  is very close to the project I have undertaken in order to consider it as a model.  For this reason I would like to ask if I order exactly the parts mentioned in TIDA-01580, will I be able to design this corresponding wearable biomedical system or do I need other parts that are not mentioned ??

    Kinds Regards,

  • Hello,

You can use TIDA-01580 as a platform.

These boards are not available for purchase. So you need to build your own boards.

For that you need to fabricate boards using the gerber files available on https://www.ti.com/tool/TIDA-01580 and then assemble using the bill of materials and assembly drawings available on the same link.

    Regards,

    Sanjay R. Pithadia

  • That is, if I study all the technical reports in detail and in general the whole project TIDA-01580 and I procure the following components;

    1) AFE4900 EVM

    2) CC2640R2F Evaluation Board

    3) TPD1E10B06

    4) TPS61099

    5)TPS63900

    6) TPS63036

will I be able to design this corresponding wearable biomedical system  according to  TIDA-01580 or do I need other parts that are not mentioned ??

  • Yes.

If you are building your own board, you don't need AFE4900 EVM, only AFE4900 IC samples are enough.

  • ''If you are building your own board, you don't need AFE4900 EVM, only AFE4900 IC samples are enough''

Could you explain to me what do you mean exactly???how i can build my own board??

  • You can use the gerber files for TIDA-01580 board and send to PCB manufacturer. They can fabricate the board for you and then you need to solder all the ICs and other passive components on the board.

  • As I have told you before, my colleagues and I would like to develop a system of portable sensors that will allow the continuous monitoring of vital biomedical parameters such as body temperature, blood pressure, oxygen saturation in the blood, heart rate, electrocardiogram and glucose in blood.the TIIDA-01580 (Wireless ECG, SpO2, PTT and heart rate monitor reference design design for medical and consumer wearables) is very close to the project I have undertaken in order to consider it as a model.
Because my teacher instructed me in the first stage not to make my own board due to a catalytic deadline, but in the first stage to use only an evaluation board to first make a laboratory prototype and thus make my first measurements, I would like to ask you if I can get / order from TIDA -01580 the corresponding evaluation boards to design this system as shown below (ie not to use IC samples):
    1) AFE4900 EVM

    2) CC2640R2F Evaluation Board

    3) TPD1E10B06

    4) TPS61099

    5) TPS63900

    6) TPS63036

So can you suggest me which sensors I should procure for the above measurements and tell me where the sensors will be placed and connected ??
Sorry for all these questions and queries I am just a completely amateur student and I do not know where to turn, as I have no help. Thank you once again in advance for your valuable help.

  • The simple answer to your question in "no".

AFE4900EVM uses onboard microcontroller to capture the data and there is a GUI for it. CC2640R2F evaluation board is a separate board - it can not be interfaced with AFE4900 directly.

TPS61099, TPS63900, TPS63036 & TPD1E10B06 - these EVMs can not be directly interfaced with AFE4900 EVM because it has it's own power supply scheme.

As a first step, you can purchase AFE4900 EVM and start evaluating it. If you want to interface it with wireless microcontroller (like CC2640R2F), you need to design and fabricate a new board.

    Regards,

    Sanjay R. Pithadia

  • 1)So if I want to implement the project I mentioned above, what exactly and what specific components should I procure ?? (which evaluation modules ??)

2)''As a first step, you can purchase AFE4900 EVM and start evaluating it. If you want to interface it with wireless microcontroller (like CC2640R2F), you need to design and fabricate a new board''

what exactly do you mean ?? If I buy the AFE4900, How can I evaluate it ?? (with what moves)

    3) So the only way to design this system I described above is to design and fabricate my own board ??

4)It would be especially useful if you could advise me exactly what the next steps I should follow for my project and give me detailed instructions.

    Kinds Regards,

    Sotiris Katsimentes

  • I suggest procuring AFE4900 EVM. It will provide you PPG & ECG data over a GUI.
