WEBENCH® Tools/WEBENCH-POWER-DESIGNER: does WEBENCH support thermal simulation

Part Number: WEBENCH-POWER-DESIGNER
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS54620

I can't find any thermal simulation in WEBECH

where can I find them, thanks

  • Hi Dimitry,
We currently do not have the thermal simulation feature in our roadmap in the new WEBENCH tool. However, we have a thermal alerts feature which will alert you if the junction temperature of the components such as the IC or MOSFET is exceeded when you select alternate components in the design.
Please let us know if you have more questions.

  • Hi ,
could you share how to use thermal alerts feature in WEBENCH ?
I want to try it, thanks
  • I am trying to lookup formal documentation for this but everyone is out on holiday here till Monday.

I am briefly explaining the idea here.

This is a typical design of TPS54620: https://webench.ti.com/appinfo/webench/scripts/SDP.cgi?ID=6E54731FCBF65053 This design has a nominal switching frequency (Fsw) of ~880kHz. Now, suppose, you were to change any component or condition that may cause overheating of the IC, it would trigger a thermal alert. In order to show how an alert is triggered, I am going to change the default timing resistor that sets Fsw from earlier value of 53.6kohm (for Fsw=880kHz) to 22.6kohm (this leads to a much larger Fsw value of 2MHz)

Once changed, due to high Fsw the IC TJ is now ~170degC and an alert is issued like one shown below. You can revisit the alerts by clicking on the warning bell logo on the top right corner next to "EXPORT" button. Changed Rt design link is here: https://webench.ti.com/appinfo/webench/scripts/SDP.cgi?ID=644855F7D4BE4E6A

Please let me know if you have further questions.
