CC8520: External PA Addition to CC8520 further increase the range to 300m

Based on the "Application Note AN089 - Real World Range Testing Using CC85xx" , the application note states the range was increased to 130m+ when CC2590 range extenders were added to CC8520, kindly let us know the output TX power setting for the transmitter. 

1.. Should we use CC2592 (with higher TX power) with CC8520, how much additional range extension can we expect.

2.. From the device functional/operational perspective do you see any challenges in coupling a higher power/gain LNA to the CC85xx device achieve a higher transmission range.

    CC8520 + CC2590 should result in about 13 dBm output power maximum though the application note doesn't specify what power they measured. This is based on the data from the CC8520 datasheet and the CC2590 datasheet. For example the maximum output of the CC8520 is 3.5 dBm and the datasheet for the CC2590 (https://www.ti.com/lit/ds/symlink/cc2590.pdf) shows an output power of around 13 dBm in Figure 7:

    If you were to use the CC2592 with the same output power from the CC8520 then you have around 21 dBm out. See figure five from the CC2592 datasheet:

    Using the RF-RANGE tool (https://www.ti.com/tool/download/RF-RANGE-ESTIMATOR) assuming a custom device (since this device isn't included in the tool) with a sensitivity of -86 dBm then at 13 dBm the range is around the estimate of the appnote at 132 m and at 21 dBm the range is estimated to be 203 m (assuming the maximum expected range condition, no interference and clear LOS). Note that this is is just a rough estimate. Real world conditions will dramatically reduce this range.

    From a design point of view it should be quite similar to using the CC2590 except for the higher power consumption of the CC2592 and the slightly easier layout due to not having the same requirements for the transmission line geometry on the VDD pins. Since the prices are not significantly different I would tend to use the CC2592 over the CC2590 in most cases.
