When to use ASK, GFSK, 2-FSK, or MSK for CC1101?

As I had understand, the ASK is for legacy products and it will be better to use frequency shift keying modulations.Does this mean that ASK doesn't have a place anymore for new product developments?

Also, assuming a scenario you have a data bit rate of 37kbps @ 433MHz, how do you determine which type of modulation will you use for a certain goal? Right now, I am doing just a short range communications, and GFSK, FSK and MSK all works well. But if I would pick one, which one should I use? And what are the factors I need to consider?

Also, the deviation given by SmartRF studio for FSK, is it already at it's optimal value? on which circumstances do we need to adjust that value?

We have course that run at Tech Days world wide, where we present various course on getting started on RF. Here is one that discusses modulation types. Generally I would say GFSK is the one to select.

In some circumstances ASK could be chosen to lower the transmit power (Its On/Off), but ASK is less robust in noisy environments.
FSK is a great choice, but it will have more noise in its side bands and therefore you will not be able to place lots of systems close to each other in space or frequency.
GFSK is my preference for new systems.
4FSK could be chosen to get the highest data rate, but you will loose range.

thanks for the info.

just one last question: in the SmartRF studio, CC1101 uses 2-GFSK, while GFSK only in CC430. do they mean the same thing? Based from my understanding, CC430 has CC1101 built in inside so I assume they are same.

Yes, you are correct, SmartRF Studio uses both GFSK and 2-GFSK and it means the same.
