Hi all,

I am new to NFC/RFID and I'm not an EE, so please bear with me...

I am looking for the smallest possible NFC reader available. The application is jewelry, so the footprint would need to be in the 4x4mm range (smaller is certainly better). The power supply would be designed around the sourced NFC reader, so we are flexible in that regard.

Hi Declan,

Do you need the NFC reader or the NFC tag in that area...? I think the NFC tag would sufficient and the reader could be larger and not included in the jewelry but separately?

If so, then the idea would be to have the 4x4mm tag implanted in jewelry and then have an NFC reader system with a larger footprint elsewhere without such a tight size constraint.

No, in fact I am looking to put the reader in the jewelry. The tag will be in another piece and they will "see" each other.

Hi Declan,

We probably can't help with that then. Our smallest IC is 5x5mm just for the silicon without any external components, and it requires an MCU to control as well. You are probably looking at something at least 15x15mm, probably more like 20x20mm in footprint with TI parts.
