CC1101-CC1190EM869RD: External Antenna for CC1101-CC1190 Ref Design

Part Number: CC1101-CC1190EM869RD
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC1101, CC1190

Hello,

My Application involves using CC1110 along with CC1190 as a range extender. I've closely followed the reference design of CC1101-CC1190 and simply replaced CC1101 with CC1110.

For the antenna I intend to use the external PCB helical Antenna as shown in the Section 2.1.6 below

http://www.ti.com/lit/an/swra496a/swra496a.pdf

Will this external PCB antenna serve the purpose of providing a power of up to +20dbm or should it be replaced with an external antenna as provided in the Evaluation boards?

Regards,

Nidhi Lodha.

  • The limiting factor for the output power in the reference design is the modulation bandwidth measurements. These were done conducted since the board doesn't have a fixed antenna.

If you use a PCB antenna the measurements should be done radiated meaning that you should be able to have 20 dBm on the air. Since a antenna has a given efficiency you have to increase the conducted power some to get +20 dBm radiated. You can also consider www.ti.com/.../swra227e.pdf as a antenna (also described in antenna DK2) if you have space.
