CCS/CC3200: Programming the custom board using cc3200 microcontroller

Part Number: CC3200
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UNIFLASH, , CC3235SF, CC3220SF, CC3220MOD

Tool/software: Code Composer Studio

Hi,

we have made the custom board using CC3200 microcontroller with the help of reference design.I am trying to program the custom board using the debugger section of CC3200 LP, but m unsuccessful.

 1) At first i m trying to get in debugging mode by connecting the TDO,TDI,TMS,TCK and GND pins of debugger to TDO,TDI,TMS,TCK and GND pins of uc.

ERROR : Error connecting to target.

 2) In other case i m trying to flash the out of the box USF file to external serial flash using uniflash by connecting the j6 and j7 pins of Launchpad to 57 and 55 pins of uc and SOP2 jumper is short of custom board.

ERROR : ack signal failed.

In both the above cases i m unsuccessful.

Please Help.

  • Hi,

We will look into it and get back to you ASAP. Please bear with us.

  • Hi,

Thanks for your reply, but your provided thread did not worked for me,

    1) I have two CC3200 Launchpads, and i m able to debug the one board with other as describe by sarah.

    2) but m not able to debug the custom board with the CC3200 Launchpad.

Connections of power : I have connected the vcc line i.e upper pin of j13 jumper to power the custom board and gnd of LP to gnd of custom board.

Pls guide me, if you want schemtaic pls provide ti's mail id.

    Regards

    Saddam

  • Hi Saddam,

Do you use CC3200 QFN or CC3200MOD? How many layers board do you have? In case of QFN is used please measure voltages VDD_DIGx a VDD_ANAx.

CC32xx chips are very sensitive to proper design around internal DC-DC. If you not follow strictly recommanded layout, there is a good chance that you board will not be functional. For example it is almost impossible to use CC3200 QFN with two layers board.

  • Hi,

        I m using CC3200 QFN and 2 Layers PCB , Voltages : VDD_ANA1 = 0.006V, VDD_AN2 = 3.3V, VDD_DIG1 = 1.04V, VDD_DIG2 = 1.04V.

I want to put my board in debug mode, how is this connected to layers of PCB? And why my board is not working even though I have referred the reference design?

    Regards,

    Saddam

  • Hi Saddam,

Your PCB layout design is wrong and from this reasons internal DC-DC inside CC3200 is not working properly. You need to have VDD_ANA1 ~ 1.9V and VDD_DIG1 ~ 1.2V. CC3200 QFN chips are not qualified to be used at two layers board from this reason your design cannot meet reference design requirements.

You need to completely redesign your board layout. You have options:

    • use CC3200MOD with two layers board
    • use CC3200 QFN and redesign your board to 4 layers

Explanation how should look proper board design around internal DC-DC you find at CC3220 layout guide at chapter 4.2.

As I remember many (at least 20) e2e forum users tried design two layers board with CC3200 QFN. I think only one had success after adding some jumper wires to DC-DC return paths.

  • Hi,

Can you provide the thread in which that guy got success.

    1) What about CC3220SF and CC3235SF QFN, does they also require 4 layers, if thy can work in 2 layers then i can replace CC3200 with CC3220SF ?

    2) But what about debugger? Can I debug CC3200SF with CC3200 Launchpad?

  • Hi,

Unfortunately I am not able find that thread. You need to search by yourself at e2e forum.

All CC32xx QFN devices requires four layer board. If you need to use two layer board you can use modules (CC3200MOD, CC3220MOD, CC3235MOD).

Yes, you can debug CC3220SF with XDS-100 debugger from CC3200 LaunchPad. But better is to use XDS-110 from CC3220 LaunchPad.

  • HI,

Yes you require a 4 layer board. We do not support a 2 -layer design for the CC3xxx devices. Only our Modules in this product line support 2-layres.

    Thanks,

    Riz

  • Hi,

I will try with CC3220MODSF on 2 layers PCB, but, In SDK of CC3220/CC3235 i cant see much examples like in CC3200 SDK, how can i get remaining examples for CC3220 like http server and client and others

    Saddam

  • Hi Saddam,

Please take a look in the "demos" folder of the CC32xx SDK.
